"No, you're right. That's my fault," Jim admits with a nod. "It's not really a fact of most people's lives. Torture and torment and prolonged abuse. I'd hate to think that the majority of people here came from places like that."

But he knows it's possible. He's seen people with the capacity to provide that and people who can withstand it.

"Tough thing to continue," he says idly, rubbing at the back of his neck. "That kind of thing never really leaves you."
