[ Raleigh's explained Jaegers and their purpose to several people at this point, so he's sort of getting a spiel down. Weird as it is that no one else knows this, everyone's taken it pretty well. He supposes fighting aliens doesn't sound so outlandish when you're inexplicably on a space station. ]
Okay, I guess it's storytime. Twelve years ago, these things showed up in our world. We called them Kaiju, after the movie monsters, but they're actually alien creatures from another dimension. I know I mentioned the Breach, that's the portal they come through, at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. So the force the UN assembled to fight them is the Pan Pacific Defense Corps. When I woke up here I thought this was a Kaiju bunker, that's why I asked if you were PPDC.
Anyway, the first few that made land were unstoppable and rampaged for days, we eventually just had to nuke them, so when they didn't stop coming... we realized that wasn't going to be a solution. Jaegers are what they came up with. They're giant weaponized robots, about twenty-five stories tall, and take at least two people to pilot. So there's a neural interface, you drift with your partner and control it with your minds. Fight the monsters head on.
[ He glances over at Mako to see if she wants to take over, but she seems to think he's doing fine. So, on to the interesting part. ]
Drifting's like... you have to be completely in sync, in one another's heads. Sharing everything, thoughts, feelings, memories. If you do it enough you don't even need the bridge to be in sync. I mean, I used to-- [ No, he's still not read to talk about Yancy. Even after five years and a new partner. ] Point is, it lingers. But I'm surprised you noticed.
