( they didn't know enough. it was a thought that she kept coming back to. they may have started being able to access more of the station, find records of the people that had previously been here but it wasn't much. it wasn't enough. what had happened to everyone? who was still controlling the disasters that were being inflicted on them?
but there was an option. a possibility. it's no secret that when they first arrived they were able to hear something. vanessa had believed it to be a spirit though with little seen or heard since she isn't certain. she hasn't given up trying to listen and, with conversations prompting more thought, she wonders if she could do more.
a séance. it's something she does little, finding the conflict between a desire for answers and her own control difficult. it's a feeling that vanessa dislikes but she feels almost hopeless, having difficulty finding any other solution. this, as unfavourable as it was, could guarantee something. and she wouldn't be alone -- alex had offered to help and that made her feel a little more secure about it all. if something happened--
she'd contacted alex first, discussing with him her idea, acknowledging her reluctance but also pressing her determination. they'd arranged a sort of plan, something that whilst opening it a little more, making it potentially riskier for all involved could also make it safer. she hoped. they'd invite someone each, someone trusted, and make the attempt. she had little to do until they arrived, not exactly any sort of preparation when vanessa had nothing, but she was the key -- the power.
once they arrived she felt she owed them a little something of an explanation and the opportunity to still back out )
I don't know what Alex has mentioned to you. ( it's directed to bobbie though she knows that she hadn't exactly told ren what he was going to be doing, vaguely asking if he could help her with something. she looked briefly to alex before beginning, a brief assessment of his expression, reassuring herself that they're all trusted here ) My name is Vanessa Ives. I'm-- a spiritualist. Specifically, I can see things -- spirits. That is what we're going to be doing here -- finding a spirit of someone that was previously here.
( she looks now between bobbie and ren, expression neutral, open. any questions? )

[Bobbie, on the other hand, is as skeptical as a person can possibly be. She's here because Alex asked, and because Vanessa is Alex's friend, but... If she's honest, she thinks this is all a load of crap.]
no subject
[ He sounds, and looks, uncomfortable, shifting his weight and fiddling with his ring finger even though there was no ring on it. He didn't miss the ring, but damn if he missed having something to fiddle with. ]
And it's worth a shot.
no subject
( she's ignoring the scepticism. it's not the first time that vanessa had heard such a thing and honestly it was the milder reaction that she'd had to her powers. in another situation she may have acted on it, wishing to prove her power, but there wasn't time for it, and she needed their trust )
I haven't heard anyone since our arrival. ( since those first voices that she couldn't be certain of ) But I know no other way of finding answers.
( because those computers were far past what she could do )
no subject
How long would you be able to maintain contact before it becomes a risk to your own health?
GUESS WHO FORGOT TO TRACK THIS LIKE AN IDIOT
A risk? What sort of risk?
no subject
( that's a lie. it depended on how calm the spirit was, depending on what actions it took but the risk was always greater to vanessa than to anyone else )
The spirit will be within me -- speaking through me, moving should it choose to. That is why I require your assistance.
( someone to talk to it but also keep an eye on her. she's also vaguely not answered the question, saying nothing on the risk to herself )
no subject
no subject
What sort of assistance?
no subject
( she certainly couldn't. but, depending on who they spoke to, what their temperament was, they may have a bigger job on their hands. vanessa hoped that wouldn't occur -- she didn't wish for anything so drastic )
A calm mind will be most useful to us, particularly if we know what we wish to ask.
no subject
he isn't sure what he expected but this seems both too simple and yet obvious in retrospect. ]
Agitation could drive the spirit off?
no subject
( or someone not open to your presence. it was a very simplistic answer but if it helped them to understand or do what she needed than vanessa would do it )
no subject
[ though wringing an answer out of a spirit might not be as simple as, say, another person. ]
no subject
[ Alex raised his hands in what could only be described as a "woah, there" motion. ]
But it ain't what we want to do today. We just wanna speak to them good and amicable like, if possible.
no subject
They hold information that we do not, information that we would like. We must remember that.
( you must. she's out for the count once this begins )
( the séance )
she needed their belief, an open mind, or at least the best attempt that they could muster. she took a breath, reaching her hands forward, close to the two that were beside her )
I need you to empty your minds. ( her voice is a little lower, gaze focused at her hands though really at a point past her hands, something not even quite in this room ) To suspend your disbelief.
( there's a pause, her mind reaching further, her focus intensifying )
I call to those who were here before, those who lived in this place. I ask you to speak with us now.
( seconds pass, quietly ticking by before her head sharply rises, a gasp emitted before she looks back at those before her. but it's not vanessa now, it's the spirit within that's come to speak )
no subject
vanessa's mouth opens. lines of communication are open. the first words: ]
What the - ?
[ the words are softly accented, irish by the sound of it. ]
no subject
It's fine. It'll be fine? It'll be fine.
He waits, while Vanessa sits with her eyes closed, and when she opens them again he feels like his skin is crawling, but that's probably psychosymatic. ]
Uh--
[ He's pretty sure he's never heard Vanessa utter anything even close to 'what the'. ]
Uh, howdy. [ Wow, lame, Alex. He actually winces when he hears his own voice. ]
You're, uh - you're on Reverie, and we've called - uh - We wanted to try to speak to someone who was here before. Who - uh - who am I speaking to?
[ He shot a glance at Kylo and Bobbie. Sorry, he was not used to this, okay? ]
no subject
[ her eyes narrow for a moment. she doesn't know this man - or the two people watching. she knows everyone on the station and she doesn't know these people. ]
I'm Lucia. And who're you?
no subject
This is Bobbie Draper, Kylo Ren, and-- [ He gestures towards Vanessa - not Vanessa - and falters. Should he point out that Lucia is in someone else, right now? Probably bad form, right? ]
-- and uh, we're the new crew. Part of it. A small part of it. Do you uh - do you remember what happened to you?
no subject
Oh God. I'm dead, aren't I?
[ the realisation barely has time to sink in before she's wondering - ] What about Philip? Is he all right, did he make it?
no subject
Uh - yeah. I'm sorry, Darlin'. But when we got here -
When we got here, all y'all were already gone. Can't say what happened to him one way or the other. Sorry.
no subject
[ she's obviously torn up about philip's death even more than her own. ]
If I'm gone, how are you talking to me?
no subject
You're, uh - comin' through Vanessa. Uh - one second.
[ He fumbled with his communicator, turned the video on, recorded not-vanessa for a few seconds and then played her back the recording. ]
Look, I know this is weird and I know you're probably confused as all hell, but - trust me, we are too. And we need your help. A lot of terrible things have been happenin' to all of us, and we need to figure out what the hell happened to all of you.
no subject
Oh, that's easy. This place killed us. [ bitter? you bet. ] All of us, apparently.
no subject
Yeah, that's - that's pretty much what I was afraid of. Why were you here?
no subject
was her job.
but she has to wonder: ] How can you not know already? It was all over the news. "Life on Earth sucks." "Energy crisis growing worse." [ she even makes little air quotes. ]
no subject
Guess not. ]
Sorry, darlin', we all came into this dead blind. But it ain't a completely unfamiliar concept. [ He wondered if he should mention the fact that some of them didn't even come from Earth, as he glanced at Ren, but he didn't know how much time they had. ]
Just - just treat us like we don't know a thing, and you'll probably have the right of it. What was the station for?
no subject
then it dawns on her: ]
Shit. It's got to be the drive. I can't make sense of that thing, I'm just the medic, but it's got to be.
no subject
[ Alex immediately perked up at the mention of the drive. Medic - that was good to know, and he'd follow that up in a second if he had the time, but the Drive -- ]
Do you know anything about it at all? What it is, where it is, what it can do or what it was meant to be used for--
no subject
That's why Philip and I decided to go, in the end, you know? We wanted to have kids at some point, but to bring a child into the world as it was...
[ she trails off. ]
no subject
Yeah, I- I understand. Trust me. I'm sorry that you didn't get the chance.
I'm guessin' it - moved the station? Because we ain't around Earth anymore, I'll tell you that.
And you said the station started - killin' you. Can you- can you tell me what happened?
no subject
It was supposed to move the station. It just went in the wrong place. I mean. None of us have a clue where it brought us.
Had a clue.
[ she shakes her head a little. ]
no subject
And what happened after that? Some sort of malfunction?
no subject
[ lucia frowns. this is pretty far outside of her area of expertise. ]
I can't explain any of what happened after. It was - crazy. Nothing that should be physically possible. Rooms just filling up with water, screams in the walls, tools going flying, smashing people's heads in.
Not the kind of thing a medic can fix.
no subject
[Oh good. Rooms filling up with water was a new horrifying one that he didn't want to think about. ]
Do you know where the drive itself was located? Was it on the station itself, or on a ship of some kind?
no subject
[ said in the tone of "obviously". but a moment later, she opens her mouth to say more -- but something, somewhere, breaks, the connection between lucia and vanessa severed. ]
no subject
her eyes pass over the other three, hands moving back together, a small comforting gesture as she recollects herself. vanessa doesn't know what happened during the exchange but she knows that someone was there -- the feeling of having her body inhabited was familiar whether it was spirit or demon.
and then, quietly, vanessa asks-- )
Did you get an answer?
no subject
[The issue now is piecing them together.]
It sounds like something went wrong with some kind of experimental drive, and it dropped them off in a system they didn't recognize.
no subject
Would that be here or where they were taken to?
