» WHERE? the bar, the messhall, various corridors
» WHAT? sadness, curiosities and investigations
» WARNINGS? none
the bar( the diary had been on the desk in river's room when she'd last entered it. the familiar sight had made her hearts skip a beat until she'd realised that something was wrong with it. it wasn't worn. when river had gotten closer she'd seen how exactly right that feeling was -- the pages were fresh and crisp, the spine never bent. it was exactly like the first time that she'd seen the diary in the hospital.
having her own, her steadily filling pages, would have felt a little comforting despite the danger of it. it always held a connection to her life with the doctor and she did enjoy rereading their adventures. though empty this was it was still a small reminder, a memory of the gift he'd given her years ago, the familiar sight and smell of the book. it wasn't half as comforting but it was something.
she'd kept it with her as she'd gone to the bar, fingers gently running over the texture of the cover, the indents of the windows. though a good memory it also made her a little sad. she missed him. river always did when they were parted but having a blank diary-- she knew that it wasn't so but a part of her mind felt as if their adventures had been erased. they never could be, she'd fight for them, but a blank diary-- it made her sigh )
the messhall( river had eventually managed to procure a pen, sitting with a coffee as she wrote in the diary. there wasn't much to say other than her initial thoughts and observations but she'd gotten practiced in chronicling her life over the years -- even the smallest detail could help.
so river wrote -- her days on the station, snippets of conversation, dates and facts that she'd discovered. and remarks, little comments of things that she thought that the doctor would appreciate were he ever to arrive here, were she to ever tell this tale to him.
should anyone be curious, or just be close enough to see as they pass, they wouldn't be able to make sense of anything that she'd written. it isn't english, with river not wishing for her diary to be read should it somehow be lost from her possession. the words are in gallifreyan and it's something that feels safe -- it can't be translated unless you know it )
the corridors( her hands are pressed to the wall, running across the panel in slow strokes almost as if river is feeling for something. occasionally her head dips closer, ear to the wall as if she's listening.
it's a tactic that she doesn't often employ but considering that there's still much of the station that they're locked out of she's trying something different, something that feels like what the doctor would do.
she hasn't given up hope of getting out, river doubts she ever would, she doesn't quit, but she has to admit that the lack of results is frustrating. it's only been a few weeks but there is so much that you could get done in that time. and nothing before has ever held her like this -- she'd commend it if it wasn't irritating.
after checking part of the wall river moves along, hands never leaving the surface. she doesn't quite know what she's looking for but river will take any answer )

( she was curious as to what he thought he'd seen in her face. something which was likely true given that she'd let her guard down for a little bit )
And what is that?

Loss.

It's not quite that simple.
( she hasn't particularly lost anything, hopefully, her diary was exactly where she'd left it at home, but at the same time her memories and adventures felt lost when this book was identical to the one that she'd started with )
I have a book just like this one. It reminded me of it, that's all.

Still, she obviously didn't want to go into it, so he downshifted.]
I've never owned a book.

( some people didn't, depending on time or planet. as civilisations evolved they'd relied more on technology, some doing away with paper altogether. it had been a task for river to find a pen herself in the 52nd century to even be able to use her diary, but then there was a planet that was a library, full of specially printed books. oh, how going there would be a treat )
Well, there are plenty to be seen here. Not that it's the same as owning them.

I haven't spent much time in the library yet. Though I've been collecting the data others have been finding there, about this station and its history.

I haven't been here for that long but already I've noticed that there is so much to be uncovered.
( or attempt to discover considering how much of the station was still locked off to them )
I've been focusing on trying to access more from the command consoles. I haven't gotten far yet but given enough time I'm sure that will change.
