( a library. it seemed like it would be a sound place to find. something that held information would surely hold information about this place.

vanessa had already learned and been surprised by, what she felt like was a great deal of information about their location but it wasn't detailed, nor did it say how. she was in space, it wasn't 1892 and there were some people that were used to this lifestyle.

she needed more. how were they here, what had happened to the people that were here before, if those screams had been any indication of what had occured. vanessa didn't know where to begin other than searching on each floor. so that was what she did )

[ One noticeable change since they had last met is that he has a toolbox with him -- a simple affair, but adequate for the moment -- that he'd found during one of his trips to the Fitness Area.

He inclines his head at her greeting, ] Vessels this size tend to require a significant crew.

[ They're hardly lacking in numbers but there's an aimlessness to many of the people here, part shock and part inexperience. ]

Do you have a particular destination in mind?

( it's pleasing to see the toolbox. he's mentioned it before, hoping to unlock a door if he had such tools. whilst they could try and unlock some of those doors vanessa has a different plan for this adventure )

There are several rooms that may prove key to our uncovering information about this place.

( and one that vanessa was particularly interested in for this adventure. though if he had any other suggestions she would happily hear them )

A library would seem to be somewhere to begin our search.

I'd heard there was one on-board, [ had yet to find it, admittedly, or he'd be there already. ]

Have you found it?

Not yet. It appears to be particularly elusive.

( though there were also several floors and vanessa had yet to look on all of them )

Perhaps we could search together?

Like so many things, it seems.

[ Her offer to join forces is unexpected but not unwelcome. Their previous conversation had been brief but it had been enough to leave a favorable impression in his mind. ]

I would welcome the company. [ If nothing else, it would be good to have someone there should he need to be extracted from any doors. ]

( she would be concerned to hear that he'd been stuck in a door considering that the same thing had happened to her after she'd arrived

she starts them walking down the corridor, eyes searching the hall )

Have you managed to find anything since we last spoke?

[ According to H. Gurszky's recent network, the doors were the least of their concernsㅡnot that he had any idea how to begin to guard against the floor. ]

I have, [ there hasn't been too much to learn, yet, though not through a lack of trying. ] Whether or not it's of value remains to be seen.

Perhaps another opinion may help you decipher that.

[ There's a brief moment of hesitation, Ren turning over his options: ] The message playing when we woke... [ by now it seems to be common knowledge, so he doesn't repeat what he believes she must already know. ] It appears there was more.

Something that suggests that the purpose of the station was scientific in nature. Though it begs the question just what sort of research station would require wardens.

( she's silent as she thinks over it. what sort of research station indeed. what research were they conducting here, particularly if it needed guarding? considering that it had seemed to end in disaster-- )

All the more reason to find a library. It may hold nothing more than tales-- ( fictional, rather than informative ) --but I know no other place where such information would be stored.

( jasnah had been searching the network for any information, which given how people seemed to use it sounded sensible, but vanessa was more familiar with written information -- books, libraries, facts. if only that was the likelihood of what would be found )

Even fiction has its uses, [ it would give them some idea of the station's age, possibly even its origin. Something to extrapolate from. ]

There is really only so much eating, sleeping and running a man can do before he begin to ㅡ [ a pause, tongue dragging across his teeth, searching for the right words: ] ㅡ lose touch.

Indeed.

( she would pretend that she doesn't know what he's talking about but it's the kind of bullshit that would be far too easy to see through )

It makes me curious about the people that lived here. They clearly had jobs, routines-- ( things to keep them occupied so that they didn't lose touch ) --but I imagine how they lived was very different from what I am used to.

( if you don't include the fact that they're clearly from different times and places )

How often could they find something new? Or someone new.

Somewhat.

[ By now it has become clear that, wherever Vanessa hails from, it differs radically from what he knows. And yet, despite this, she has adapted with admirable skill. She has earned his respect for that. ]

Most find the structure comforting.

[ They really only need look as far as their own peers, how quickly they'd settled into their own approximation of routines once it became clear that there would be no clean escape for any of them. Even Ren, himself, was guilty of this to some extent; his rooms on the Fourth Deck made regular visits to the Fitness Area easy ㅡ it was only a shame about the pool, which remains too polluted for use, but even the monotony of the treadmills held a kind of appeal. ]

It would depend on what they were studying.

( find it comforting. vanessa couldn't say if she did. having a routine certainly did help make acting daily easier, it gave her a reason to get herself out of bed, but this place did not feel comforting, and she wasn't certain if she wanted to feel comforted )

No, [ he admits, shifting his attention back to the corridor; he thinks briefly of the Finalizer, of how gleaming and sterile the ship was by comparison. ]

For one thing, I'm not entirely convinced of the station's long-term viability given all that I've observed.

( she wasn't certain what he could mean by that though it concerned her )

What do you mean?

[ He makes a sweeping gesture with one hand. It's an indictment of the overall state of the station as much as the corridor itself; aboard any other vessel this would never have been allowed to stand.

Even the Millenium Falcon had been better maintained. ]

It does not inspire much confidence.

( she wonders if perhaps someone more familiar with these kinds of corridors, with space and the station itself may find his statement more obvious )

Do you believe it will not remain? That we are in danger?

( when weren't they in danger of something )

Yes.

[ No denial is offered because they both already know the answer. Had stood together, in a corridor not very much different from this one, drawn together by those phantom screams. ]

Though in this case it was more an observation of the station's age and apparent lack of care.

That sounds like danger to me.

( her voice is hushed, attempting lightness despite the seriousness of the thought. if the station could simply fall apart due to lack of care-- )

Though it makes our task feel more important -- finding our freedom before that occurs.

It won't come to that, [ it's a strange thing, this urge to reassure her.

Not because he sees her as particularly weak (rather the opposite, in fact) but it's something that he can give her. ]

I'll tear every door off its hinges, if needs be.

( vanessa smiles though there's no cheer to it. she does at least recognise what he's doing )

Then I hope that you're able to.

( with how long they've been walking vanessa feels like they've covered a decent amount of this deck )

Perhaps we should try another floor?

The fifth next, I think.

[ The upper levels get enough foot traffic that it would be difficult for anything to remain hidden long. News would have circulated by now, given how fond everyone is of the network. ]

My room is on that floor. ( she says it only to add context ) I haven't seen a library yet.

( though a second pair of eyes may find something that she has missed, particularly when the place and time is different to what she may be looking for )

What else do you think they did here? They could read, if we find a library, but aside from any job--
