Tech Team catchall [semi-open]

» WHO? 9S, Amos, Erika, Hank, Haruto, Naomi, and anyone else who wants to prod the station's tech—or the people working with it.
» WHEN? After the gravity problems.
» WHERE? Mostly Deck 1, but some work throughout Reverie.
» WHAT? Collaborating to unlock station systems.
» WARNINGS? None planned; will add as needed.

One month in, and one major station failure. Not to mention the mystery rosters, fragmented logs, and doors that like to eat people for lunch. With Reverie's latest crisis mostly back under control, there's time for everyone to rest, recover...

...or, put those resources towards unlocking what they can.

The physical doors aren't budging anytime soon. But air, heat, and electricity all move throughout the station. So do the signals from the communication consoles, and the software that connects them. Whether your skills include hacking terminals or rewiring connections, you can probably lend a hand. And what you can do will go a lot further with some like-minded people helping out.

So, welcome to the party. Less alcohol, more live electrical wires... and occasional (de)activation of nearby lights or doors. Local power fields seem to be coming from inside the walls, a possible objective for some. The more digitally inclined might find themselves engaging with the communication consoles, trying to extract data or lift the apparent lockdown.

Watch your step on those dismantled panels, and try not to cuss out the software too much. At least some of it is on your side.

[[ooc: This is a catch-all for tech things. Hank's bought into a few bits of station access, which I'll be tossing up starters for below. Feel free to add your own or tag around—on the above objectives or any others. Spectators also welcome!]]

[He lets out an exasperated sigh.]

Getting nowhere... What about you? Any luck?

Not really. The station's systems are locking me out, every way I turn.

[ He sighs, bringing a hand back to scratch at his neck. ]

I wish I knew what else to try.

[9S glances at the terminal again. Was Haruto processing information remotely? No, that's not possible, unless he's using some technology he doesn't know about.]

It looks like we're all hitting a dead end. Man, what a pain...

[Even if they hadn't been able to do it, 9S had been confident in his own abilities until recently. This place was really hurting his ego.]

You should take a break, I'm worried about how long you humans have been working.

[ There it is again. "You humans." Haruto opens his mouth to protest, tell 9S he's fine to keep working, but just then his stomach butts in with a gurgle. Haruto laughs. ]

Maybe I ought to stop and get something to eat.

[ He disconnects from the terminal mentally, pushing away from the keyboard and stretching his limbs. ]

Do you... need anything, 9S?

[personal profile] twoaffirmations 2018-06-15 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Not really, but I can accompany you to the Mess Hall if you'd like.

[9S smiles, genuine and soft, despite having his own ulterior motives.]

[personal profile] neuralnet 2018-06-17 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... I don't want to pull you away from what you're doing, but if you want a break, I wouldn't mind the company?

[ Always so polite and deferential. It was the Japanese side of him.

He turns to leave the room, walking slowly so that 9S can follow if he so chooses. ]

Sure. Even we androids need a break now and then, you know? Things can get pretty boring when nothing interesting is happening.

[Or things can get frustrating when you're not making any progress. Regardless, 9S really did just need a moment to walk away, and so he follows Haruto to the Mess Hall. Maybe if he comes back with a fresh mind, he'll have a breakthrough.

He pipes up about halfway there.]

...You're pretty good at hacking.

[ Haruto can't help the way he freezes for a second mid-step when 9S calls him out. He's quick to recover, but not quick enough that 9S couldn't pick up on the hesitation.

He forces a smile on his face and laughs. ]

Yeah, well, it's something of a hobby of mine.

[9S picks up on the hesitation, and now he's sure that there's something Haruto isn't telling him. But what? He can't just ask him.]

Oh yeah? I wish I had time for hobbies... How did you get into hacking? I didn't think it was as vital for a human in the Old World.
neuralnet: (Nino23)

[personal profile] neuralnet 2018-06-30 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[ "Old World." Haruto realizes there's a lot about 9S's world that he doesn't know. ]

Not vital, necessarily. I... was given access to the internet at a young age. [ Technically the truth. ] It all sort of built up from there. Soon I was hacking my way into just about any system I needed to get into.

Oh, the internet... I heard it once held all the world's information.

[The internet as it was, was long gone in his time, though they had been able to recover some data from old servers. So Haruto's story all adds up, except for one tiny detail.]

Still, that's pretty impressive! I've never seen a human process data faster than they can input it.

[9S sounds as genuine and pleasant as ever, even as his praise seems almost accusatory.]
neuralnet: (10)

[personal profile] neuralnet 2018-07-04 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's right.

[ The internet was such a huge part of Haruto's life and formative experience. It's hard to think of a world without it.

But then, 9S points out the speed with which he was processing data, and he knows he has to come up with an excuse. Something close to the truth-- he doesn't want to lie to his new friend. ]

I'm, ah... Enhanced. Cybernetic implants are not uncommon in my time.
twoaffirmations: (game | uncertainty)

[personal profile] twoaffirmations 2018-07-04 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[9S considers that for a moment. Nothing about his reaction, or the way he asks his next question, implies that he doesn't believe him.

It appears to be genuine surprise.]

So you can hack into things remotely while also retaining a physical connection? Even I can't do that.
neuralnet: (Untitled-92)

[personal profile] neuralnet 2018-07-07 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[ 9S seems to have bought his excuse. And though it isn't fully a lie, it isn't the whole truth either, which makes Haruto feel a little safer... For now. ]

Our worlds' technology must be different. That's all.

[personal profile] twoaffirmations 2018-07-09 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I guess so. [He won't push it for now.]

Well, let's eat! Not that the food's any good... Maybe the food dispenser will actually work today.
neuralnet: (Hollow-Art 2)

[personal profile] neuralnet 2018-07-21 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you eat?

[ Like he said, their worlds' technology could be different. Maybe androids on 9S' world needed food. ]
twoaffirmations: (game | thoughtful)

[personal profile] twoaffirmations 2018-07-22 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
If I get the chance, but most of the food here is... Yeaaah.

[9S doesn't need to waste his time eating food that doesn't even taste good.]
neuralnet: (Nino44)

[personal profile] neuralnet 2018-07-24 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Not very good?

[ Haruto laughs, understanding 9S' reluctance to eat the replicated food. ]

No, you're right. I'd avoid it too if I could.
