( after his initial arrival, jim had mostly been laying low. between the music and a general sense of unease, he'd gotten the feeling that he'd arrived in the middle of some serious shit and he hadn't wanted to get in the way. typically, he would have been the one in the center of it all, making the mess bigger but this was too big an unknown and he hadn't wanted to hurt anyone.
but, with things settling, jim was on a mission to figure this place out. sure, maybe stopping at the bar, a place he's been a few times, wasn't the best place to focus himself but everyone needed a drink sometimes and he thinks he's got a good reason. he had died. he'd been stricken with radiation poisoning and he'd said his goodbyes and he'd died.
but here he was, alive and in one piece. he's actually been wondering if maybe he shouldn't find someone with some medical training to check him out since he's not sure if radiation lingers after you die.
but for now, he's going to have a drink and kick his feet up on the stool beside his. he's going to take some comfort in being alive even if he's far away from where he needs to be. )
( he was always going to find himself here. it had taken a little longer than expected but the minute jim steps foot on the bridge, he lets go of a breath that he hadn't realized he was holding. this isn't his ship and he's not in charge but he feels like he should be here. there's no chair for him to sit in but the stations lining the area are familiar. he runs his hands over them and then slips into one, eyeing the screen quietly.
he reaches out and touches it but nothing happens. he tries it again but again, nothing happens. )
Shoddy craftsmanship.
( but, nothing about this station is very well put together. that she's staying afloat at all is a godsend because every time jim walks by the observation area and sees the planet below, he remembers the enterprise's almost plunge to earth because of the gravity. )
Kind of don't want to repeat that again.
( jim's minding his own business when somethings jerks him backwards. a loud sound of tearing echoes off the walls and before jim can really stop it, the stupid jumpsuit he's wearing is ripped from side to the small of his back.
he stares at the wall, offended, and just notices a protruding edge he's apparently caught the cheap fabric on and, with minimal strength needed, had ripped a gaping hole in the thing. )
Perfect.
( sighing, he continues onto his own room where he kicks the door almost all the way closed and strips off the top half of the jumpsuit to look at it. was he supposed to walk around like this now? even starfleet uniforms were sturdier than this. )

spoonishly for plotting. )

Re: command
( and jim thinks that grants him some leeway, at least. it won't take him long to get the hang of this though. granted, he's used to things working and not being dark and silent but that's just a little bump in the road that he can overcome. )
I'm not playing at anything. I am a captain. Just not of this station and the last thing I remember before showing up here was my ship and another ship speeding down towards the surface of the Earth because we were caught in their gravity and the Enterprise was busted up.
( well, that was the last thing before the dying. the dying was the real last thing. )
I'd rather avoid that and considered there's a planet below us...
( he trails off and winces. )

Not everything on the bridge is as function as it should be. But if you're a captain somewhere else...maybe you could have some luck figuring out how to switch them on?

( he's quick to apologize and sends an embarrassed smile her way. he's not usually defensive over the whole thing but sometimes it happens unexpectedly. he's gotten to where he has on merit and talent, not on name and he's proud of that. )
I'm more than willing to try. Never seen a station like this. The ones that my ship docked with were always, you know, alive and active.
( this one was just barely hanging on. )
I know how my ship works but this is a whole different beast here. I'm surprised there's still juice left.

[They're being a general they. She isn't sure who all is doing it, but knows it's being done. That should give him some hope of something to do.]
If they manage to get in, do you think you could fly one of the transports?
[She's trying to put together a mental list of people to approach to help with an escape when it comes time.]

( sulu had done the bulk of the flying on the enterprise but you didn't get to his position without knowing how to do it. )
I've flown starships before. Shuttles and transports aren't difficult if you know how to do that. Just a matter of getting in front of the controls and memorizing everything. Won't take long.
( he was a genius and that wasn't even much of a brag. he just was. )

Then you'll be the first person I contact when we gain access to the area.
[Her arm extends outward, offering him a hand to shake.]
My name's Karen, by the way.

( he reaches out, gives her both a nod and a shake of his head. )
Pleasure to meet you. There anyone else on this bucket that can fly or am I the first?
( there had to be others, right? he was a good pilot but not great and there were a lot of people floating around this place. )
