open; SPACE GARDENING
» WHO? Haru and YOU!
» WHEN? Before the current station ruckus; a day or two before.
» WHERE? Hydroponics Garden
» WHAT? We're all gonna learn how to assemble and work a space garden, hopefully.
» WARNINGS? Intense Gardening.
[It is at least a week or two since Haru made the first announcement about finding the materials to make a hydroponics garden, and most of the time after that announcement was spent working out the kinks and working with other people in improving the state of the garden.
Today though? Haru thinks she is ready to make the garden available to other people, a space where others can come when they feel stressed out... or a space where they can come and grow anything they desire.
She sends out a text @EVERYONE:]
Hello everyone, This is Haru.
The hydroponics garden is ready and available to use. If anyone would like to drop by I will be here for quite some time if anyone has any questions. It is located right across from the Mess Hall.
[If anyone DOES decide to drop by? Haru will be there tending plants and free to answer any questions or give a simple run down of how the garden works.]

(:
The addition across from the Mess Hall is no exception. He's been watching idle comings and goings for a while now, but the network announcement had at least confirmed his suspicions. He doesn't respond to it, but instead makes a note to add it to his typical rounds. There's often very little that's new that draws Ryo's full attention. He isn't interested in basic discoveries and information that he already knows what to do with and what can be done with it. This, however, is something with practical promise.
When he comes by, he takes the opportunity to slip around Haru while she's either busy with someone else or distracted. He wants a moment to look through without being disrupted, to see what is available to everyone on the station and what the general set-up is. He has a few ideas of his own by the time she's likely not to be occupied, mostly ranging in the form of precautionary tactics to medicinal plants.
He turns his head once he's certain she's done, giving her a small nod. ]
Sorry, [ he says, the blue of his eyes fixed solely on her for the moment. His mouth curves into a polite, if barely there, smile. It's the expected amount of social niceties, much like the pitch and the cadence of his voice. It's smooth, placid. ] I didn't want to interrupt your conversation.
[ He adjusts the sleeve of his long, pale coat before continuing. It seems so impractical, to wear all white in a station like this, but he looks wholly untouched. ]
You've likely already been asked the basics, [ he says, attention finally lifting to plants she's been tending. He already has knowledge of what they are, so the impression is more cursory as though one assessing their growth thus far. ] Do you have any plans for a backup power source, managing stress, and the prevention diseases?
[ The university he works for found him to be a boon in several circumstances. Chemistry and biology always had a use for any plants in some respect or another, so it wasn't uncommon that he'd solve interdepartmental issues for them. ]
:)
It was simple to her, of course.
She gives him the same pleasantries back, a smile and a nod while taking in what he has to say. Of course she had thought about all of those things. But with her own limited knowledge for that side of things, plus... her limited supplies. There were just some things that had been set to the side.]
It's no problem.
[She takes note of his appearance, takes not of his posture. Not really trying to read him just yet.]
With my limited supplies, there wasn't too much I could do in the way of those topics just yet. But I didn't plan on neglecting them.
[She will dust her hands off, giving him her full attention now.]
Though I am always taking suggestions and ideas to improve the quality of this area.

There's temporary fixes, [ he says, eyes settling for a moment beyond her to the rows she's arranged. ] Organic fungicides could theoretically be made with any number of materials already available or stashed elsewhere. Considering the station's conditions and the adaptivity of fungi in space, that would be the most pressing concern outside of their regular care.
[ He relays this information without so much as a beat of consideration or hesitation. It comes naturally, like a steady, tidal current. ]
Otherwise, do you already have a set schedule for monitoring and providing nutrient and water intake? [ It's a prompt for more information, in the end. That wasn't something that was noted in his earshot. ] The stress added to plant life in space is something that's been studied recently. They're more prone to irregular rooting.
[ He pauses, his hands settling into the pockets of his coat. ] It's likely that those here before us were aware of these problems as well. If that's so, there's a possibility that something used to generate red light may be left on the station.
[ It's a subtle way to lend a hand, a sort of unspoken "I'll keep an eye out for it," but he figures it would be beneficial. In the event the replicators failed, there would always be backup. And where there is well-maintained backup, there's greater security. ]

She won't say that out loud though, that is something for her thoughts only.]
Then a concern of that nature needs to be dealt with immediately. [She would have to look into how to make an organic fungicide, unless Ryo here would be willing to spill the secrets.]
I do, I have set a schedule that myself and only a select few other people are tending to right now. I'm being more vigilant about the schedule due to the garden really not having a fair chance to grow yet. [She hums.] I have noticed that.
Thank you for the pointers, I am grateful. Haru Okumura, it's a pleasure.
[She will leave it open for him to respond with his own name if he feels like.]
Is this a subject you are fond of?

And so, when he glances back over to her, he blinks once as if she'd said something peculiar. Or, perhaps, he's bringing something distant back into focus like the clearing of water from a camera lens. ]
I came into contact with it through my studies, [ he says, after a moment. It's not quite an answer, but: ] It was practical to keep in mind, though I assume for you it's an interest? [ Despite how still he is, there's the impression his mind moves quite quickly. His expression settles back into something more neutral, though it just seems that's the way it typically settles. ] A mixture of baking soda, water, and milder dish soap works well for a fungicide. The replicators have a chance of generating the first item, but the last will have to be scouted for. [ He knows it's likely to be in the Mess Hall if it's anywhere, if not stowed in the individual units.
He inclines his head slightly. It's a polite gesture, though he's never been one to care for these sorts of formalities in private. ]
Asuka is fine, [ he says, committing her name to memory. ] It's no trouble.

[It was just an off-handed comment really. She noticed that he seemed to know what he was talking about and of course that means that Ryo must obviously like what he is studying, right?
She takes note of his response. Straightlaced and more close lipped than she thought. She wants to keep an eye on him herself, so allowing him to come in and out of here may be a good idea. Keep your friends close, but your assumed enemies closer.]
I will go scouting for those ingredients at some point. I just appreciate knowing.

Of course. [ Courteous and pleasant, but not inviting. She's not incorrect to assume he's close-lipped, at least. Everything else is just assumption. ] I appreciate your efforts.
[ He half-hums. ]
I see. If nothing else, these things frequently turn up in odd places. [ Like, you know, guns and konbini food. This entire outfit, even. ] You might become lucky.

[Silently, this whole project is Haru attempting to make something stable for the station. It really is just who she is as a person. Doing things for others sake.]
Maybe that will be the case. Everything in this room was found in that very same manner. Quite frankly I was surprised that I stumbled across anything like this on the station.
[To her it meant that someone else before them was trying to do the very same thing, and... they were cut short.]
