[It is at least a week or two since Haru made the first announcement about finding the materials to make a hydroponics garden, and most of the time after that announcement was spent working out the kinks and working with other people in improving the state of the garden.

Today though? Haru thinks she is ready to make the garden available to other people, a space where others can come when they feel stressed out... or a space where they can come and grow anything they desire.

She sends out a text @EVERYONE:]

Hello everyone, This is Haru.

The hydroponics garden is ready and available to use. If anyone would like to drop by I will be here for quite some time if anyone has any questions. It is located right across from the Mess Hall.

[If anyone DOES decide to drop by? Haru will be there tending plants and free to answer any questions or give a simple run down of how the garden works.]

A garden sounds great! The food that comes out of the device in the mess hall isn't all that appetizing, so I was wondering when you humans would find an alternative.

I don't know anything about gardening myself, but if you need anything I'm here to provide support.

The food that those machines produce are a disgrace if you ask me. I feel like this may rectify the situation...just a little.

If you ever want to learn or observe, I would be willing to show you.

No kidding, I feel bad for you humans since you have to eat that stuff.

Okay! How about right now? I mean, if you're not busy...

I sincerely hope that the garden can groow faster. Because that stuff is very unpleasant.

I'm not busy, come to the garden?

[9S makes it there in record time, poking his head into the garden first before entering.] Miss Haru...?

[Haru is exactly where she promised she would be! In the garden working on her set up and moving plants around here and there. Some of the smaller ones are getting moved closer to the heat lamps, the bigger ones moved to a place they won't block the light.

She turns her head when 9S walks in.]

9S, hello! Come in?

[9S nods his head and steps into the garden, surveying the area as he walks past. He's seen plenty of plants, all much bigger than this, but never a garden. It was incredible, the ingenuity of humans.]

Wow, you did all this by yourself? It must have been a real pain.

[It's definitely a compliment. 9S just thinks he would have never had the patience for something like this.]

I had the idea to start it, and I came up with the layout. But a few generous souls were kind enough to help me put it all together. I feel very lucky to have found those who would be willing to drop by and help me tend it every so often.

After all, I've never headed a project as important as this one.

[She definitely deflected the attention off of herself.]

Alright, then what can I do? I'll have you know I'm a fast learner.

[He's eager to help! After all, she was the first human he saw when he woke up on this station, and she helped orientate him. She also just happened to be really pretty, and 9S is easily swayed.]

Well, that will be good! I need you to help me check the roots on all of these plants. The ones that don't have soil. These are the plants that we are growing with the systems. The idea is that we won't need to soil to grow the plants.

[They have to make sure the roots aren't tangling up within one another. They have to check the pH of the water... all that good stuff.]

But...how does a plant grow without soil? I thought that sort of thing was a requirement.

[9S' knowledge of plants comes primarily from passive observation. He was much more interested in the remnants of humanity.]

Not with this method, no. I'm starting some of the plants in the small amount of soil we have so that they can establish their roots! then I move them to the planters without soil so that they can continue to grow there.

It is a mixture water and air filtration, and heat lamps. Have you ever heard of hydroponics?

[She would be happy to explain anything.]

So humans have found a way to make plants adapt to growing without one of their core requirements... That's impressive! Human ingenuity really is amazing.

[9S really means that compliment in earnest! Even if it seems a bit misdirected.]

So I get that the hydro is for the whatever, but what's a ponic?

[Color him curious; not that it's hard to do.]

I suppose it is, isn't it? The person who originally figured this out must have lived in a place that didn't have very much good soil for plant growth.

[She giggles into her hand.]

Mm, just think of it as one word.

I wonder where that could be... I mean, the dessert doesn't have very good soil, but it doesn't have much water either.

[It will just remain a mystery, because 9S is pretty swiftly distracted by Haru's laughter. He smiles himself, a little sheepish, but really just endeared by her.]

Okay, one word it is! Now about those plant roots... Where should I start?

Places with deserts are a good example of an environment that would do well to have a hydroponics garden.

[She pulls over one of the planters, pulling the lid off to reveal the roots of the plants growing out of it.]

We're going to make sure that the roots aren't tangling with one another. That way one plant doesn't suffocate the rest of them.

[He thinks the water would just evaporate, but...]

Wooww... [9S crouches down to get a better look at all those tiny, white roots.] I've never seen a plant uprooted like this before. I guess what you see on the surface is only half the organism.

[He reaches out to lightly tug at one root that's gotten tangled with another.]

But if they have so many roots, wouldn't one or two tangling be inconsequential?

Well, it won't be perfect always, but if you can keep the roots neatly as well as you can then there won't be any fear of any one plant killing off the others.

Every plant needs the nutrition.

[The roots untangle easily enough. Haru has been keeping an eye on these herself.]

I see... Alright Miss Haru, I've got it from here!

[Not that he wants her to stop talking to him, or anything... But he better make himself useful. It can't take that long, right?]

You've been working hard, so you deserve a rest.

I work hard because I want to give back to everyone here. There... isn't much I can do besides this.

[So guess who keeps working.]

[9S pauses to look at her, mouth slightly agape before his lips curving in a smile. He nods firmly.]

Right. Then let's work hard together, Miss Haru.
