( 0 0 1 ) » WAKE UP

Were you asleep or were you unconscious? It doesn't matter: when you come to, there's an odd taste in your mouth and there's a low-level mechanical hum in the air. Your head hurts and you feel nauseous. You aren't anywhere you know: everything around you is metal, from the floor you lie on all the way to the ceiling. You are dressed in a jumpsuit you definitely weren't wearing before.

"We tried to save the world. I think— I think we did the opposite."

The message repeats on a loop. If you look for its source, you find a comms device on the floor next to you. The logo on its wallpaper says REVERIE TERMINAL. Upon closer inspection, you find the same logo on your jumpsuit.

Welcome to your new home.

( 0 0 2 ) LOOK AROUND

You've woken up — but where have you woken up? It may be time to explore your new home. Rifling through a crew quarter will make the room's terminal lock to the comms device you're carrying; the room becomes yours. That includes everything in it, from the additional jumpsuit to the two extra sets of underwear. In some quarters, you may find remnants of whoever was here before you: a book on the nightstand, a coffee mug still on the table, a lonely sock on the floor.

A look around the shared areas will reveal the bar, some of its bottles already open, the mess hall, observation deck and the gym area with its dirty pool. An even closer look around these areas might reveal basic first aid kits as well as basic tool kits and fire extinguishers. The kits are located near the fire extinguishers in compartments in the wall that are not immediately visible. Hopefully, nothing's on fire and no one needs first aid... but that tool kit might come in handy.

Every now and then, as you explore, you might find yourself standing before a door that is locked. Try as you might, you will not be able to get it open.

( OOC: What items characters find of those who were there before them is up to players, but please limit it to a single item that is mundane and somewhat useless in nature. )

( 0 0 3 ) HAVE A BITE

Sooner or later, all characters will have to make their way to the mess hall if they want to eat. In the mess hall, here are a number of replicator-like devices that sometimes work and sometimes don't— but after a recent malfunction that some characters may have noticed, they seem to work just fine... or at least as well as ever: nothing is particularly palatable, but at least it's nourishment, right?

So why not sit down at a table, whether it's already occupied or not, and have a meal. Maybe use it as an opportunity to introduce yourself, or just to complain about what passes for coffee around here.

And if coffee isn't your preferred beverage, well. There's always the bar.

( 0 0 4 ) NOISES IN THE WALLS

For some, it's been over a week on the station. For others, merely a day or two. For all, things are starting to change: maybe you were asleep or maybe you weren't, but surely the scream that reverberates through the station will startle you. Was it human? Whatever it was, it seems to be coming from the walls of the station. Banging, clanging, then more screams.

Are you going to chase the sounds? Hide away from them? Try to investigate?

If you follow the sound of screams through the station's corridors and halls, you might feel someone - or was it something? - grab you from behind and pull hard. But when you turn around or turn your head if you've fallen, there's nothing and no one there. If you investigate and perhaps put your ear to a wall to see if the noises really come from there, or bang on the wall, you might hear something other than screams and clanging. Strain your ears and you might hear nothing at all — or you might be able to make out a soft "help me". It's barely above a whisper. Did it sound familiar? If you try to take apart the wall, two things will happen: you'll feel uncharacteristically weak and lethargic all of the sudden, and you'll find nothing at all but wiring and more metal.

Whatever you do, you'll find that the noises stop after a while, with no discernible source other than "the walls". And then hours later, they'll start again. Stop again. Start again a day later— and then stop for good.

( O O C ) ACTIONS

Hello Reverie Terminal Operators! Welcome to our inaugural event. We hope you'll enjoy it!

To help exploration and interaction with the station, we have put together ten (10) 'actions' that you can request. These actions range from very minor, such as receiving a small piece of information about the station, to major, which may be a more vital piece of information or something far less pleasant, and are completely opt-in. These actions can help get your character involved in the plot, jump into the plot and its mysteries, and have more of a personal prompt to jump off of if you so wish.

Please note if you would avoid particular kinds of consequences (for example, if you'd rather your character not be injured), and we'll try to accommodate that, but please be aware that heavy themes are in play and the actions may feature body horror, injury and hallucinations.

If you'd like to receive an action, please reply to this comment with the following:

In the future, actions such as these may be "bought" with bonus AC.

Please use content warning in your top-levels wherever necessary.

[ wanda puts a hand on karen's shoulder, her expression a step away from being a glare. ]

Stop. Don't hurt yourself. We'll get you out somehow.

[ she glances over at frank, her expression more puzzled now - seriously, why all the movie references? - and then over at the control panel again. ]

I think she is right. But so are you, we're not going to find it.

[ she considers their other options. they could try working the panel again until something works and karen's arms are free, or they could find something to cut through or burn through the metal. ]

Has anyone found any tools? [ not referring to just them, but to anyone who's been on the station and tried exploring. ] Something that will heat the metal, or cut through it?

[ she's not sure if anything like that would even exist on the station, but they've got to figure out something. ]

I haven't seen anyone mention anything on the network.

[Karen's trying to be calm, since the touch to her shoulder was enough to still her and help her focus. She can't actually be useful here besides imparting information, but she doesn't have any to share. So far, people are still exploring and learning how things here work. Apparently, doors that absorb people are part of the way that things here function.]

I found something in the room I ended up claiming. It doesn't seem like much, just a nail file. But maybe other people have found things that could be more useful.

[The idea of heating the metal sounds a little intimidating, but if the door could liquify once maybe they can trigger it to happen again.]

[ the discussion reminds him of what he found, and he pulls a cigarette lighter out of his pocket, showing it to wanda. ] Here. Think it'll do something?

[ wanda senses karen calming at the placement of her hand on her shoulder, so she keeps it there, occasionally rubbing her thumb back and forth over the fabric of her jumpsuit. frank pulls something out of his pocket and she turns again to see what it is - a cigarette lighter.

"think it'll do something?" she honestly doesn't know. it might melt the metal, but it might not be able to get hot enough and she's pretty sure a nail file would only break. but they don't have any other ideas. ]

I think it's worth trying. [ and then she looks back to karen. ] What about you?

[This is sounding less and less like a good idea. But it's not like they have a lot of choices. Out of frustration, she briefly presses her forehead against the door. When she feels it start to have some give she gasps and pulls back, her head safe and her arms scraping free a few inches. It solidifies again within a second, leaving her trapped once more. Obviously, this door has a mind of its own. So she nods, giving her consent.]

I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get out of here.

[ he nods at karen's assessment and takes a step towards the door, trying to figure out where he's going to start in. ]

Me too, Karen. We're gonna get you out of there. [ he lowers his voice for only her to hear, though honestly he doesn't care if wanda overhears. they're probably already labeled the most dramatic space residents here anyway. ] I haven't let you down yet, right?
subplot: (43)

[It's not that she doesn't trust Frank. She does, with everything she has. It's that this place is strange, and no one knows what to expect. Her head turns toward him and she leans in just enough to press her forehead against his chin. ]

I trust you.

[It's as good as an answer to his question. No, he's never let her down. So whatever he decides to do, she trusts. When her head lifts, she glances Wanda's way and nods. They're ridiculous and she feels bad for the fact that she has to be stuck with them. Go on ahead and do your worst, team. She's braced for it.]

[ she does hear them, but doesn't interrupt. it seems to comfort karen at least a little bit further and they need her to stay as calm as she can if this is going to work. wanda nods at karen, then at frank. ]

I'm going to try to keep her safe by building a forcefield. That should keep the heat from getting to her arms. [ she hopes. but this is way easier than trying to contain the blast from a bomb; the main thing she's concerned about is the fact that the forcefield can only go around the parts of karen that she can reach. still, it's better than no protection at all.

she creates said forcefield, wisps of red encircling karen's arms, and then nods back to frank. ]

Go.

[ he feels an ache he shouldn't when karen leans against him, allowing the contact and even leaning into it himself a little. they're going to get her out, he has to believe that the same way he's always believed in them - seeing things out to the end. if by tenacity alone, they'll get through this too. frank nods at wanda's signal, striking the lighter and moving forward to start heating up the door. he holds it as close to karen as he dares, trusting wanda to keep her safe. or as safe as she can be right now.

the door starts getting hot and he has no idea if it'll have any effect. it's like everything else has been: a crapshoot. he holds the lighter there until it gets molten in his hand, but he keeps the flame focused on one spot in the door, not caring if it burns him. any pain is worth getting karen free for him, and suddenly, the door's surface starts to fluctuate again. at first, he thinks he imagined it, but then he's grabbing karen's elbow with his free hand, keeping the lighter going with his other because he isn't sure if the two are connected yet. and when the door starts melting around her the same way it hand to begin with, he drops the lighter altogether, reaching into the liquid - now redhot - but he pays that no mind either as he yanks her out with all he has. it burns one him more than her with the forcefield in place around her arms, but he easily ignores that too, checking her for injuries as his eyes fill with water. ]

You okay? [ the scratches she inflicted on herself are a little bloody, but she's in one piece, and he puts a hand on her cheek, smearing his own blood there by accident. ]

[She's relieved to be free from the door, but is close to freaking out because he's hurt himself to help her. She hates that he does it, and wants to yell at him for it. But she won't, not with Wanda there. Instead she nods, eyes looking to his burnt arms. Tears are in her eyes as she glances back up to his face.]

Yeah, I'm...I'll be fine.

[Her cheek leans into his hand and she swallows a lump that's formed in her throat. It's emotion. Guilt and worry, brought on by knowing that it's her fault he's bleeding.]

Thank you.

[She looks over to Wanda, shakily smiling. This isn't exactly the best way to meet someone or make a good first impression, but Wanda has her gratitude and loyalty for as long as they're here.]

Can you do something to stop his bleeding?
catastrophics: its course through her (the poison that runs)

[personal profile] catastrophics 2018-05-18 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ to keep the forcefield in place and as effective as time goes on is taking a lot more concentration and energy than it should, and wanda is focused on the heat and metal not hurting karen any further. so it's not until she's free that she realizes, a little too late, how much worse his hands have gotten. her eyes go a little bit wide at the state of them, and then karen asks her if she can do anything to stop it. ]

I'm sorry, I don't think so. [ telekinesis isn't delicate enough to stop things like the flow of blood, and even if it were, holding the forcefield for as long as was necessary has her feeling woozy and drained. ] Do you know anyone with a first aid kit?
oorah: (073)

[personal profile] oorah 2018-05-18 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[ he shakes his head dismissively for karen's ask and wanda's answer both. all that matters is that karen is safe -- he'll deal like he always does. ]

I know a guy. [ no really ] A doctor.

[ he'll start herding karen that way, nodding his gratitude for wanda too as he makes his way past. ]

See you around, yeah?
