I. INVESTIGATION (ACTION)

[ Should anyone be present in the recently opened command deck, there are a pair of teens currently situated at one (1) command terminal after one calls the other one over (his name is "Akira," apparently). Either way, some might recognize the one in all white as Ryo, who seems to have come across something very interesting if you take the time to peer over after they've finished a brief recording and summarily a longer text post on Ryo's end. Longer doesn't really mean much to him, it seems, as he finishes and posts it at an impressive clip.

After some idle manipulation of the screen on both their parts, Ryo eventually will notice anyone else who seemingly wants to get in on what they're looking at. He doesn't really look up, but offers this question as he idly scrolls through the interactive map he has up. ]

Would you like to take a look? [ Respond or not, he'll eventually glance over once he completes a second scan of one deck. ]

II. RECORD & PLAY (MAP.AVI & TEXT)

[ The video attached to this post is short, but lacking no details. It opens to a pair of teens arranged like opposing bookends. While one the teen in white sweeps through the map on the framed interface, the teen in black lingers beside him. There's no sound, but the conversation seems rather animated on the teen in black's behalf. The one in white answers him more succinctly, but the focus is undeniably the way that one targets specific locations on each deck. As he goes, there's a steady stream of information translated into visual format. Every once in a while, the teen in white's neutral expression softens a little when the more excitable one isn't looking, something around the corners of his eyes as he glances to him. Eventually, once he's covered all the discoveries he seems to have made, he lets the teen in black take over and steer the map with much less grace and precision before powering the communicator off. ]

Good afternoon.

As you've seen here, in investigating the newly available command terminal, I've come upon an interactive map. For ease of access, I'll list the key locations and their features:

Deck 1 (inner ring): a farm and a chapel.
Deck 2: a restricted room connected to the mess hall with a four digit numeric combination named "plants."
Deck 5: a restricted room named "library" with a four digit numeric combination and a restricted room with an eight digit numeric combination named "medical and research."
Deck 6: a hangar.
Deck 7: storage and recycling.
Shaft: "maintenance."

(Here is a screen capture as well: map.jpeg)

As we are aware, many of these locations are inaccessible to us for a variety of reasons. However, there are several areas that have the potential to be opened with more immediacy.

I'm certain some of you are familiar with the mathematical probabilities of particular passwords. Attempting those you know are common first before proceeding to those more difficult and unlikely (with the exception of suggested "secure" passwords) would be our best solution. I've included a procedurally generated list of possible combinations for each door (assuming each are numbered 0-9). If inclined, please update the documents as you use them to avoid entering the same pins. If manual input is necessary, my suggestion would be to take shifts.

4 digit combinations rep plants.docx / 4 digit combinations rep library.docx
4 digit combinations no rep plants.docx / 4 digit combinations no rep library.docx.
8 digit combinations rep.docx, 8 digit combinations no rep.docx.

The combinations provided should be 10,000 possibilities and 5,040 possibilities for four digit combinations respectively and 100,000,000 possibilities and 40,320 possibilities for eight digit combinations respectively.

Considering our prolonged stay, I believe the medical and agricultural should be our initial focuses. However, the former is also one of our greatest challenges.

Of course, if you have objections, you're more than free to do as you'd like without further comment or suggest alternatives.

It should also be noted that the command terminals themselves request an access code to see further information. At this time, it seems far more intensive than many listed here.

Thank you.

( ooc: yes, those links lead nowhere because there's way too many possibilities to generate and most generation tools refuse in any organized fashion. also, if you'd like to see all possible 4 digit combinations (with and without repetitions): here you go. now you know why i didn't link them lol. for those who are interested in breaking the command terminal code, it would take about six days of continuous work with no breaks according to the answers provided here.

this is an open post for ryo, but feel free to make your own prompts in this area in your own posts! i would be 100% down for everyone gatherin' here, but my inbox... lol.)

[Though the humans may be most interested in the agricultural and medical areas of the ship, Arid cannot say the same. Instead, she is far more interested in the possibility of escaping this derelict station—or, at the very least, learning more about its surroundings. ]

Is there anything impeding our access to the hangar on Deck 6?

Good find. I don't suppose that map has anything about the station's current position, does it?

Okay. Thanks. I'm coming up from the mess hall. Let me know if you want coffee...

Black coffee it is. See you in ten.

[ And nearly exactly ten minutes Apollo steps in through the ruined door to the ops room, like the biggest, sunniest Starbucks barista ever. In his hands is a cup of black coffee, still piping hot thanks to Apollo's particular skills. And he only managed to spill a little bit of it on his hands in the process. ]

Yours was the single shot capp with soy milk, no foam, right?

[ Apollo sets the coffee mug down carefully at Ryo's elbow. It's black as night because HE'S JOKING of course. ]

Oh, I don't know... [ Apollo sounds breezily nonchalant as he takes a seat at Ryo's side. He throws a silent wave of hello almost sheepishly at the young man who flanks Ryo at his other elbow, but quickly turns his attention to the map itself. ]

I don't suppose it shows anything externally, does it? [ Apollo can't hide the chord of hope in his voice as he asks; if there's one thing he's desperate for, it's a navigational map of where they are. A star chart, or something like it. ] Or is it just a map of the inside?

[ Not one to play a card until he absolutely needed to, Ren's contributions to the door opening teams was merely that of an observer hanging back; a role not dissimilar to when he was at Shujin High, really. It was a shell that was easy to slip back into when necessity called for it and of the things that made him stand out at Shujin - the unlikely height, the messy hair, the ominous shadow cast by his criminal record, given shape and near corporeal solidity purely by the strength and breadth of the whispering campaign - only one didn't follow him into space hell, so he may as well take advantage of it. Keeping notes, gathering info, all that fun stuff. One network outburst and a face to face shouting match aside.

Now that the doors to the command deck are open, well. What kind of observer is Ren if he doesn't observe?

Around the deck even the minor discoveries seem huge when compared to the complete dearth of data in their initial weeks aboard the station. Between questions Ren makes modest suggestions insofar as he knows anything about flight, let alone space flight, but as remarkably out of depth as he is at this there should surely be others in the same boat.
]

Hm?

[ The two together off to the side are certainly different. Ren's less gathering info now than taking in the darker one and determining that, yeah, that's Fudo Akira. His complicated feelings on him aside, he can't see why he can't or shouldn't interact since that's what he's here to do, but it does give Ren some clues as to the company Fudo keeps.

A moment of thought passes, a small shrug preceding Ren's stepping onto the social stage that had been set for him.
]

I can't say that I can make heads or tails of it at any distance, but we're here to try, right.

[One of the reasons Akira and Ryo were neigh inseparable was that they tended to cover one another's weaknesses with their own strengths. Dealing with the door? That'd been more Akira's speed, and he'd contributed how he could, all within the scope of not tipping his hand too much as to the nature of his inhuman strength. But once all of their concerted efforts bore fruit and they managed to get into this place, what looked like a command room of sorts, he steps back, knowing that he'd be more likely to accidentally break something in here than do any good. Ryo, on the other hand... this was exactly his sort of jam.

So he mostly just tags along, keeping his hands shoved into the pockets of his black jeans as he walks around the room, keeping himself busy by a (completely harmless) look around the place. His attention is pulled towards Ryo at the call, though, and he strides over, bending over to take a look at what he'd found.

Yeah... Okay, this was interesting.

He's still fiddling with the display when Ryo addresses someone else, calling them over. He glances up to see, well, one of the people he'd prefer not thrown into this situation right now, but ain't that just the way life goes sometimes? He straightens up, setting Ren in a careful glare. He's gonna be civil, because Ryo's being civil, but there's a tension written into his shoulders that declares he wouldn't be shy to using force should it for some reason become necessary.

Ren seems a little too clever for that to happen, but something about that slipperiness to his demeanor just makes Akira more nervous. He lets Ryo explain, leaning against a console nearby.]

Yeah. [He cants his head a bit to one side as he asks,] You got any ideas? I've already tried some of the obvious ones.

[(By which he means, several permutations of '69' and '420.')]

Go Search? I've used it once or twice when I needed to figure out how Tokyo worked. I'm from the countryside and my guardian wasn't really about holding my hand in the concrete jungle, as it were.

[ Ren Amamiya is keenly attuned to the sensation of being watched. Not that Akira anything approaching subtle in whatever aspect of life he's engaging in, the mild physical threat he's radiating is yet different from the exclusion, the social alienation at school. More aggressively protective than hateful, not necessarily, and as such Ren turns his gaze in passing at Akira, something of a calm and centered air about it. Respectful, at the very least, about Ryuji's feelings toward Akira, which makes it a lot easier for Ren to keep a lid on his own opinions.

Nothing to worry about.

Shortly after Ren takes Ryo's invitation to peer at the screens, equal parts impressed at the ingenuity and relieved that they have more of an idea of their boundaries. It's now less like they're groping around in the dark, and Ren feels better knowing that they have target areas to zero in on.
]

It's an eight-digit code; I doubt you've tried all of the obvious ones. Because of how many digits are required, the possible combinations are in the tens of millions. I'd need a piece of paper to be more accurate, sorry.

[ Mental math? Not his strong suit. But he picked up enough from studying with Makoto to know a thing or two about probability. Nonetheless Ren unsuccessfully tries a few times before his hand is drawn up, a finger rubbing beneath the swell of his bottom lip as he turns to Ryo again. ]

Is there anyone onboard that can write algorithms? Because of the sheer number of possibilities we can't brute force the doors by hand so we have to be a little more creative, I think.

[He hadn't really expected to stumble across something which he and Ren both shared, that they had both been from relatively isolated parts of the country before relocating to a place as big and as wild as Tokyo. Fortunately, he'd had the Makimuras to introduce him to the city, showing him how he could see Mount Fuji through his window on a clear day, acclimating him by degrees so he could begin to feel at least somewhat comfortable as quickly as a kid could adjust to an entirely different city, an entirely different family, an entirely different way of life.

If he and Ren talked about it, they would have a decent amount in common in this regard.

Anyways, he definitely thinks he's being subtle, but it's entirely correct that Akira Fudo doesn't have a subtle bone in his body. It's easy enough for both of them to see, though he tempers quickly after Ryo rests a hand on his forearm, the light touch of his fingertips immediate in distracting him. The point he was trying to make with this gesture and the exchanged look was clear enough as well. Well, Ren seems to be playing it civil with them in addition, so he decides to back off at least a little bit, his body language growing less defensive and more lax. He listens as best he can when Ren speaks up, but... eventually his eyes just sort of glaze over. He emits a low groan.]
Aw, fuck, are both of you like this? [People who know math? Eugh. He spent enough of his energy tuning out the worst of the technical bullshit that Ryo trots out on the regular.

He sighs throug his nose, looking away. He'd already seen the pages full of numbers, and he vaguely understands what they mean by an algorithm, but honestly the only thing keeping him here rather than wandering off to go mess with something else is Ryo's hand resting in the crook of his arm.]

Well, just guessin' ain't gonna do much good. We better get something tryin' to crack these codes, and preferably not by hand. We'd still be puttin' in codes by the time we're all old.

[He glances to Ryo at the movement of his hand, the path of his fingertips down his arm before it drops back into his lap. Freed, Akira shrugs, wandering over a few paces to inspect another machine.] Well, if you two nerds wanna try to figure that out, go right ahead. Just let me know when you need me to break something.

[After saying that, it draws some concern to how closely he's inspecting that terminal...]
