@all (from @r.asuka)

[ On the morning of the 15th, there is a network-wide ping issued approximately twenty-three minutes after the roster is released to the public. ]

Hello.

As I'm certain you all are aware, a roster has been sent to each of our devices. Given that this is yet another item on a growing list to be examined by us all, I believe it's important for each of us to come together to discuss any possible concerns or ideas that may require teamwork.

@PALPATINE and I earlier discussed the possibility of a non-compulsory meeting to sort through these issues. We agreed it would be in our best interests.

If you're inclined, please come to the Mess Hall at 19:00 in three day's time.

[ ooc: so! this will be broken down into sub-headings as discussed on the ooc plot post and utilized as a kind of "catch-all." if you think anything needs to be added at any time, please feel free to contact me through pm, at [plurk.com profile] rasasvada, or on disco at morning star#3715. or, you know, add it yourself! i don't mind.

noticeably, this is self-directed! if you character wants to speak or make a point to everyone, feel free to do so. no one is policing how this goes or making introductory comments or whatever else. open floor, y'all. ]
veristitalian: (facing up to duty)

me neither! but you're faking it convincingly \o/

We don't have soil, where I come from. The ground is rock, and the plants are adapted to it.

[She answers, relaxing as well. Botany isn't her area, but there's nothing like a technical conversation with an expert to leave Jasnah feeling calm, on familiar territory.]

The crops are rockbuds; they produce polyps, which are full of a network of small seeds called Lavis, which can be ground into flour. If we could only find a parent structure, they could be cultivated easily on the floors and walls of an empty room. Admittedly, I don't know about their properties as a filtration system.

wikipedia is my dearest friend now

[personal profile] contorta 2018-05-21 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
( that sounds interesting and very unlike what he knows. rockbuds? )

There are a variety of plants that grow on rock where I'm from, but I've never heard any of this.

( he reaches into the pocket of his jumpsuit, producing a small metal container. opening it reveals a small soy bean sapling. ) Are the planets you know comparable to this?

[She leans forward, and takes a closer look.]

You could trim leaves like this if you're quick enough to catch them, but I'd expect them to retract into bud or bark at the tread of footsteps. Otherwise, a tendril like this would never survive the storms. Even a cutting should have furled in on itself.

Are all your plants this still?
contorta: (--5)

[personal profile] contorta 2018-05-21 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
( she leans in, the plant stays perfectly still. maybe it sways a little with the movement of prax's hand, but beyond that, there's no moving.)

Most of them are. What storms?
veristitalian: (Default)

[personal profile] veristitalian 2018-05-21 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Highstorms?

[Glancing up from the plant.]

Not many worlds have them. The storms on Roshar are probably the reason we don't have soil. They rage so intensely that they bring boulders crashing along with the stormwall. They always sweep in from the same direction, and their arrival can be predicted. If you're caught out in one, you don't survive.

I've never heard of anything like that. I know solar storms and on Earth, there are tornadoes and the likes. ( he's read all about those. about their effect on soil and plant life. it wasn't anything like this. )

Plants are adaptable.
veristitalian: (conversational formal)

[personal profile] veristitalian 2018-05-23 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
They are. I wish I had seedlings and cuttings from my world. I'd be glad to hear the result of a specialist's comparison.

[Even Shallan's sketchbooks would be useful.]

Returning to the subject of air filtration- how many would you need to keep us alive here if the systems all failed?
contorta: (—40)

[personal profile] contorta 2018-05-23 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be interesting. Maybe we can compare notes some day.

( his interest in botany may have originated from a selfish desire, but he's come to love it a lot. )

How large is the station, exactly, and how many people are there? ( he looks around, as if trying to gauge the answer to the latter question from how many are in the room. which incidentally is precisely what he's doing. )
veristitalian: (blanched with shock)

[personal profile] veristitalian 2018-05-24 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Sections of the station are closed off. I don't have a real way to estimate the size.

[She admits, reluctantly.]

Or the same units of measurements as you. There are- between fifty and a hundred of us here? Difficult to guess, for much the same reason.

Does anyone know where the food comes from?

( he used to work and live in a place called the breadbasket of the belt, of course he's thinking about food production. )
veristitalian: (confused and appalled)

[personal profile] veristitalian 2018-05-28 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
We know where the distribution point is, but not the larger supply. In my world, food that bland is usually soulcast- that is, artificially created, but we should make sure that's true here too.

[It's a thought that's occurred to her before.]
contorta: (p012)

[personal profile] contorta 2018-05-28 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Soulcast. ( he echoes the word. she's already elaborated, of course — artificially created — but it sounds unlike any idea of artificial creation that he's familiar with. )
veristitalian: (traditional old vorin hair)

[personal profile] veristitalian 2018-05-29 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Transformed, using stormlight- rock is popular, because there's always enough of it. Rock turned into grain.

Bland. But enough for an army to march on.
contorta: (--2)

[personal profile] contorta 2018-05-29 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never heard of anything like that. Soy is useful for feeding an army, if necessary, but rock? Rock has no nutritional value.
veristitalian: (Default)

[personal profile] veristitalian 2018-05-30 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
But it isn't rock. It's grain.

[It takes on every property thereof.]

Or meat, if you use a different stone.
contorta: (—51)

[personal profile] contorta 2018-05-30 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
How does that work?

( he's fascinated, which is a good distraction from everything else. )
veristitalian: (Default)

[personal profile] veristitalian 2018-05-30 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
An infused emerald will create any plant matter, and an infused heliodore any meat or flesh.

I'm unaware of any conclusive research into the cause of the properties of the gems themselves.

[personal profile] contorta 2018-06-02 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That's very different from everything I know about biology and physics. And chemistry.

( he shakes his head a little. it's not disbelief so much as just — letting it sink in. )
veristitalian: (Default)

[personal profile] veristitalian 2018-06-02 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Your world may have a more advanced conception of both than mine. A great deal of the knowledge and technology we had has been lost.

[She admits, letting out a breath.]

I'd like to learn more, if you have any background in it?
contorta: (--8)

[personal profile] contorta 2018-06-03 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
My background's in botany. It includes some chemistry and biology and a very limited amount of applied physics.

( he offers a slight smile. it falls flat, but at least he tried. )

I don't know how good a teacher I am, but I can try.
veristitalian: (conversational formal)

[personal profile] veristitalian 2018-06-04 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

[She says, with a small, reserved smile. It's good of him.]

I have a few more people I need to speak to here today. Shall we meet later?
contorta: (—56)

[personal profile] contorta 2018-06-04 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Contact me?

( he indicates the comms device with his chin. )

I don't think any of us are going anywhere for the time being.
veristitalian: (almost but not quite a smile)

[personal profile] veristitalian 2018-06-05 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I will. Thank you.

[She promises, with a polite nod, before moving away to go chase Kamala about potential scholarship.]
