( 002 » ENSEMBLE ) gravitational.

» WHO? EVERYONE
» WHEN? JUNE 1 onward
» WHERE? ALL OVER THE STATION (literally)
» WHAT? Gravity is always on, until it isn't.
» WARNINGS? zero g, paralysis, the vacuum of space, possible asphyxiation, possible character death

0 0 1 » LOSS OF GRAVITY

The outer rings of Reverie Station rotate around the shaft of the station, using inertial forces to simulate gravity. One moment, this works fine — people are walking along corridors, sleeping in their beds, eating in the mess hall or having a drink at the bar. The next moment? In some parts of the station, a crunching sound can be heard, like metal against metal, and shortly thereafter, the rings cease to spin, causing a jolt to go through all rings.

And then what passed for gravity just stops.

Your food, drink or blanket might have floated off after the jolt. Remember to engage your mag boots, if you're wearing them, lest you follow suit. Good luck getting around in zero g.

( )

0 0 1 . 1 » UPSIDE DOWN AND FLOATING

The lack of gravity may be disorienting at first for those not used to operating in zero g environments. Fortunately, mag boots mean you can continue walking along corridors — though the boots will engage with what used to be the ceiling of the corridors as much as what used to be the floor. No matter which part of the corridor you're attached to, if any, better make sure to collect anything that may be floating around, lest it becomes a dangerous projectile whenever gravity turns back on.

The mess hall and the gym area in particular are in a significant state of disarray. In the mess hall, some cutlery (of the grey, hard plastic variant) has been left unsecured and is floating harmlessly through the air. The same holds true for a large amount of protein powder. In the gym area, meanwhile, the entirety of the dirty water from the pool is no longer in the pool.

( ☺︎ )

0 0 1 . 2 » PARALYSIS INDOORS

One moment, you’re walking — or maybe you’re floating, mag boots disengaged. Either way, from one moment to the next, you become unable to move. Your arms, your legs, even wiggling a toe becomes a thing of impossibility. There’s a heavy weight on your chest, despite the fact that gravity is still not back on. Taking a breath is an ordeal. You can’t call for help, you can’t signal to anyone, you can only stay still.

( )

OOC: The length of paralysis is up to players.

0 0 2 » TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

It isn't clear why the rotation of the rings has stopped and gravity ceased, but one thing is certain: life on the station is a lot more difficult without gravity, especially for those not used to living and working in a zero g environment. The sensible thing would be to fix whatever is wrong, but in order to do that, you have to figure out what's wrong first.

One way to get an idea might be to put on a suit (if required) and go out an airlock to have a close look at the upper ring, where the crunching noise could be heard the loudest. The objective is to identify the problem and, if possible, fix it — but unless you have the power of flight and can breathe in the vacuum of space, the walk from the airlock to surveying the ring will be taxing in and of itself.

Better not lose hold of the station or each other and whatever you do, do not disengage those mag boots. Hopefully, no debris will come flying at you. The station may be built to withstand it, but you aren't.

( )

OOC: There are some 20 vac suits with oxygen packs and small thrusters for (weak) propulsion available in the spaces currently accessible to characters; these can be found in various airlocks.

0 0 2 . 1 » FLOATING AROUND

The station may be built to withstand debris, but you aren't — which makes it all the more unfortunate that some debris does catch you. In the side, in the face or in the legs, it doesn't matter: what matters is that the impact is strong enough to disengage the mag boots, which means you are now floating in space.

Did your suit take damage? Do its thrusters still work, or not? Is your oxygen pack still connected properly? If your connection to the station network is still intact, now would be a good time to call for help and hope that someone's close enough to get to you in time before you float too far from the station to still be reached, before your oxygen runs out, before any possible injuries you may have sustained take their toll.

( )

OOC: With this prompt, the extent of possible injuries, the time before rescue and factors such as oxygen or damage to the suit are all up to players. Please keep in mind that character death is very much a possibility — but that death means relatively little. Should a character die from their injuries or lack of oxygen, they will awaken again. As per the death mechanism outlined in the FAQ, characters are brought back to life (possibly repeatedly, if rescue takes a while), but they lose something. What they lose is up to players as well (a limb, memories, senses, social skills, ...) and the duration of the loss can range from a few days to permanent loss.

0 0 2 . 2 » PARALYSIS OUTDOORS

One moment, you are walking along the hull of the station. The next, you're frozen. Your arms and legs no longer move and there's pressure on your chest. Even taking a breath becomes an ordeal. You cannot move forward. You cannot move back. You can't even signal or call for help.

What choice do you have but to wait out this paralysis and hope that it loses its hold on you before your oxygen runs out? Better not panic, lest you use up more of it.

( )

OOC: The length of paralysis is up to players.

0 0 3 » WORK IT

For those who've successfully made the walk across the hull of the station to find the problem, it will soon become obvious what has happened: debris crashed into the station and got lodged between the uppermost ring and the shaft of the station, where it is stuck, preventing the spinning of the ring.

You will need to work together to cut through the debris or dislodge it. It's heavy, and you have little leverage in the absence of gravity.

Keep in mind also that if you successfully dislodge the debris, the outer ring will start moving again. Be prepared, especially if you're still connected to the ring by your mag boots. Inertial forces can be quite strong, so you will need to brace yourself or risk being dislodged yourself.

Hey there! I requested a helmet for breathing-in-space purposes, and looking at these prompts it occurs to me that I'd really need to know whether or not Venus would have it before writing up anything in prompts 2 or 3. Is it safe to assume that Venus would have a way of breathing by now, or should I hold off until a mod response comes in for the response I gave?

[ to say it's disorienting is an understatement. ground and ceiling and walls all cease to have any meaning - there's just air and not. things float aimlessly around in here, coffee mugs and glasses and bottles and cards, and venus-

-venus is living.

she disengaged her mag boots the moment she realized what was happening. and it's incredible. the feeling of weightlessness, the air gliding over her wings and eyes with each pump of her wings - she's flying and more, easily making her way through the halls as fast as she could want. there's some rough spots, of course. how could there not be? she's still getting used to things, and so she hits walls, and collides going a bit too fast, and by this point she's a little bruised and there are some scrapes all over her arms and she's only barely avoided a bloody nose, but she's laughing and smiling and utterly enchanted with herself.

she makes her way to a floating clipboard with a single motion, easily snagging it from the sky - and when she sees someone passing through the hallway below her, she tosses it to them in a fit of fancy.

[ the air is thinner here. no, that's not quite right - there isn't any air. that's why her wings don't move her except in circles, that's why she's working with a helmet and breathing in a limited supply of oxygen. it's a lot to deal with; she's starting to feel like she's out of her league.

and then, a small rock - barely three inches across - hurtles through space in just the wrong way, at just the wrong speed. she sees it too late, unable to do anything but spread her wings and brace herself, and when it impacts with a shocking amount of force - knocking the wind right out of her - she feels her feet leave the ground.

and just like that, she is helpless. she cannot move. and even if she's spinning in a way that won't let her focus on the station, she can already tell - it's drifting away from her. she focuses on the communicator on her wrist, typing as desperately fast as she can-

001.1 } upside down and floating (bar)

[ kovacs spends most of his time in the bar for a few reasons, the biggest one being that's where the alcohol lives. but, it's also a less traveled area than other parts of the station and sometimes, he just likes his solitude.

but, the bar becomes a really shitty place to be when everything starts fucking floating. the bottle he'd been partaking in is suddenly upside down and dumping on his pants, something he can't avoid because he's also suddenly in the air, floating around like he's some goddamn fairy.]

Fuck.

[ that's really all he can say, isn't it? he spins a bit, trying to find the way to engage his mag boots and earns a bottle against the temple for his trouble. it's more annoying than anything but he still grabs the bottle and tries to throw it.

it just continues to float. ]

002.2 } paralysis outdoors (still as a statue)

[ suddenly, things stop working. suddenly, he is very aware of the black of space around him because he's staring out at the endless maw of space when his body just freezes.

he knew he shouldn't have fucking come out here. what had he been thinking? should have just stayed in the bar with all the upended alcohol but no, no, he'd gotten curious and found his way out onto the hull for a look and a breather.

being stuck in one place was not easy.

immediately, quell's voice is in his mind, telling him to calm down so he doesn't use up all his oxygen. he needs to conserve and work the situation. his sleeve is a tool, he's the weapon.

too bad he can't fucking use the weapon at all because he can't fucking move, can't even scream.

he's just standing there, looking like an idiot, peering out into space like he's some tourist who can't get enough of the stars.

fuck. ]

003 } work it (no diggity)

[ he's not dead.

he's not dead and he wouldn't be feeling this level of relief if he'd been anywhere but here. it's not like his stack can be re-inserted into a sleeve because he doesn't think there's any available, for one. for two, no one has any idea how to do that so dying would have been bad.

but, he's not dead.

no, he's not dead and he's actually being helpful because fuck this station for trying to make him some permanent fixture on the outside of this ship and fuck this debris that seemed to be determined to wreck everything.

if all the booze was gone, he might end up crying.

he gives a corner of the debris a kick, half expecting that to solve the problem.

it doesn't. ]

Hello! I wanted to know during the paralysis stuff, can Naoya still summon his Persona? The P1/P2s don't need fancy movements/guns/card crushing/mask tearing, so I'm just wondering if it was possible to have a scenario where Naoya still can't move but a Persona is pushing him (that's totally not weird and frightening right)

002/.01/.02:// SPACE WALKERS [ OPEN ]
[ Sick and tired of sitting on her fritzed out hands, the sudden disarray throughout the station comes as almost a relief to Lorna. Now that's more like an insidious mutantnapping space station. No gravity? No problem.

Zero G is not the same as her low-rent version of flight; she has to work to merge the two. It takes her several minutes to mitigate the dizziness and nausea, get it back to its previous plateau, as she only arrived a week ago and is still adjusting. But then she's able to float out of her quarters with a mask of confidence like "I just woke up and could do this", torn metal strips around her wrist steering her course with a thready green glow.

While some people are collecting the weightless debris in the halls, Lorna pushes it aside and seeks out anyone who looks like they might have half a clue what's going on. She follows the first purposeful person she sees to the airlock that looks upon the gravity ring loudly malfunctioning. Lorna chews her lip, eavesdropping blatantly on the people discussing the vac suits. Then, without weighing it further, she shoves her way through to one. She ends up picking another, a suit small enough she won't drown in, and puts it on like she knows what the hell she's doing. Not wasting resources, that's what. She can do a lot more out there than she can in here, and it's a better test of her new limits than she's damn doors.

She's not asking permission, so for anyone curious, ]

I can move some of the debris, keep people safe out there. Pull them back if they go flying. [ But uh if someone could check that her O2 is hooked up properly 'cause uh she's never even been snorkeling. Just don't do it while calling attention to the mildly restrained panic in her eyes. Let's all be real cool. ]

[ ooc: Lorna has magnetism powers but they don't work as well as she's used to. Smaller shreds of metal won't be a problem for her but anything bigger than a fridge door she might be able to give an encouraging nudge. Call her in for a full rescue or a total calamity, whatever you feel like, just specify the setting using the original prompt numbers, like so

002: Inside the station, before going out.
002.01: Outside the station, concerning road clearing.
002.02: Same as above but either your character or Lorna become afflicted by paralysis, further complicating the situation.

No character death please, but other than that I'm cool with anything. ]

003:// REVERSE IT [ OPEN ]
[ After the suits have all been filled and the people in them ferried safely (enough) across, she lends her skills to the problem itself. She had assumed she would be out of her depth and it would be require some feat of mechanical engineering to get things back on track. But moving heavy stuff? That's her heroic bread and antivillain butter. Even if cautioned against it, she'll have a go at moving the metal debris or hull of the ring with her powers, to zero effect. Relenting because she has no other option, she can help remove sizeable chunks of sticky-outy metal bits. ]

004:// WILD CARD [ OPEN ]
[ If you have another idea for a starter, go for it! It doesn't have to concern the space walks described above and can be set anywhere and at any time during the event. If you'd like to plot something out beforehand, leave a comment here. 💚 ]

( loss of gravity )
( it was a strange sensation. at first vanessa wondered how she was flying but a few more seconds told her that she wasn't moving, just floating.

floating. in the middle of the corridor.

she was trying to think it through, though considering that vanessa knew little about being here or living in space her thoughts came back to a few questions: was this normal, who had done this, what was coming? nothing felt as though this would be a good situation.

what she really wanted was to get down, though vanessa had no idea how to do that. her attempts at moving had caused her only to turn and eventually she stopped, hoping that someone could help )

Is anyone there?

( it felt a little embarrassing but someone would have to come along at some point )

( paralysis indoors )
( maybe you didn't get there in time, or perhaps it's another day and the boots had somehow become disengaged. either way vanessa was floating, and not particularly enjoying the sensation of it. it felt unnatural and strange and even though she didn't particularly have anywhere to go it would be nice to feel as if she could go somewhere.

or to feel at all.

it comes suddenly. she'd been trying to move her arm, to try and turn herself but found that no matter how hard she tried it wouldn't move. vanessa tried again with her legs, trying to kick but they wouldn't move either. where the loss of gravity had simply felt strange this was absolutely concerning )

( take a walk on the wild side )
( vanessa's stood at the airlock, looking out of the small window there to see if she could see anything. she isn't suited up, simply curious. she had heard others mention going outside to see if they could find the problem. looking out of the window doesn't provide vanessa with any answers there but it does give her one concern )

It doesn't look particularly inviting.

( not knowing that there's specific apparatus to venture outside in would do that, though perhaps even if she had known about it she wouldn't find the prospect of going out into space much more pleasant. it didn't seem anywhere she wanted to be that close to )

1. Is the debris artificial or natural? Is it space rocks or some kind of destroyed vessel/structure?
2. Will they be able to take any of the debris back into the station to examine it closer?
3. With the limited number of space gear, will there be some kind of way for us to keep track of who's using what or are we just handwaving that? Because if everybody wants to do some kind of space walk that's not really going to work ICly. Or should we deal with that IC?

❧ I. INSIDE

[It'd been while he was working in the clinic about when the gravity goes off, and the first sign of it was some of the holy water floating out of its mug.

He'd anticipated that the gravity in this station was artificial in some way, but he hadn't expected it to break. But of course it would. With a sigh, Alucard watches the water float by.]

I suppose if it's not one thing...

[Alucard makes no effort to turn on his boots. Instead, he calmly floats from his seat and exits out the door.

He doesn't look all that uncomfortable as he just flies by people in the hallway. However, Alucard will make a point of stopping for people who may seem sick, confused, or hurt.

Or if you're just gonna bother him, that's fine too.]

❧ II. OUTSIDE

[After determining what the issue had been, Alucard has quickly volunteered himself. He isn't sure how he himself may be affected by space, and he's not about to risk it, but he does have some of his strength back and is able to fly to the problem.

That's more than most people.

With one of the suits on, Alucard begins to fly towards the blockage on the ring.]

I think with enough of us, we should be able to resolve this and restore some semblance of order.

I have enough strength to offer for this, but I may not be able to help with the doors afterward unless there's some sort of miracle in store for me. [His voice is wryly spoken.] Regardless, I am at your disposal.

❧ III. AFTERMATH

[After the final stretch, the debris has been moved. It's taken all of the supernatural strength that Alucard has to give. With a snarl, he helps make the final move to finish restoring the ring's rotation, and at the very last second of it, he feels it--

His chest rips open under the suit, and blood gushes out.

Alucard lets out a choked noise, clutching his chest.]

I need... to head back inside. I suggest... [He sounds as if he's having trouble breathing.] I suggest someone watch for awhile, to ensure it keeps moving.

[It's a struggle, but Alucard slowly floats to the closest airlock. As it shuts behind him and he accumulates to gravity, he tries to land on his feet.

Instead, he goes crashing to the floor. He wrenches the helmet off and gasps, squeezing his eyes shut as he struggles for a moment.]

He remembers where the airlock is - his airlock that Amos helped him to crack open all those weeks ago. Now that Amos has freed it up, it’s not hard to punch his way through the basic console commands that let him throw himself bodily out in to the freezing cold vacuum around the ship. Venturing in to the deep expanse of space is the only way they’re ever going to be able to find out what the actual fuck is going on with their rings. Because those rings are kind of important.

But, honestly? Honestly Apollo isn’t prepared for it being so crowded out here.

With the heat of the distant sun on his back, warming him to his very core, Apollo darts among the various people in their suits. He’s frankly horrified that so many people are out here, considering how few of them are used to navigating their way around space, but he can’t fault them for trying. In fact, he admires them for trying.

What a good crew.

And so he flits from person to person, checking that they’re okay with thumbs up and thumbs down, before zooming (effortlessly, mostly) towards the source of the problem...

Except he doesn’t get there.

Apollo can’t tell what it is, it all happens so fast. One minute he’s diving around in a gentle curve around the decks and the next... He’s frozen, frozen in the kind of way he’s never felt before. Not just a physical coldness but a complete shut down of everything – every fibre of his being, all of him, rendered unresponsive. One minute he’s zooming around the ship’s hull and the next – nothing works, nothing answers. Not so much as a finger. He’s frozen like a statue, mid-swoop, as he dives round the hull of the ship.

But the arc continues. Frozen in to a neat swan dive but unable to check his course, Apollo crashes in to the side of the ship in a fiery explosion of wayward solar energy.

And it hurts.
