001: Alex, Bobbie and Amos are Judging You

The Martians and the Earther are sitting at a table in the Mess Hall, and they've started a game. That game? To rate everyone else on the ship in order of attractiveness. Want to be rated? 002: Closed, Alex >> Frank

Going on the morning walk-about to search for Holden was ritual, at this point, and Alex was very used to Frank coming over first thing before they headed out. So the door was already open, waiting for him. Alex was fishing through his drawers, trying to find where he'd stashed that singular glove that he'd found, to show him for a laugh. But instead his fingers found something else - a thin sheet of plastic, creased and bent a hundred thousand times, and Alex's heart nearly stopped.

He pulled it out of the drawer like it was made of plutonium, careful not to touch the edges of the drawer with it.

Christ. Oh, Christ.


003: Open, Alex >> Anyone who wants to find this wrecked man.

He goes straight to the bar.

It's not that he isn't a fairly regular fixture there, anyway, but especially right now, all he really wants is to drink until he numbs everything. So hi, have a depressed Martian with a bottle of who knows what, sitting at the bar and just staring at a picture of a woman and a child smiling lovingly at the camera. He keeps stroking his thumb over it, then looking wrecked and saying something like 'god damn it' under his breath before he pours himself another drink. One of his arms is still wrapped up in a sling against his chest.

If he recognizes you, he might look up when you get close, and sigh. "Hey, partner. Everythin' alright?" Because it's a lot easier to worry about other people, than to keep being miserable about yourself.

[ ...yeah she's. Definitely upset, it doesn't take the ghost drift to know that. He can feel the tension from across the table, can see it in her shoulders. Is she maybe into Amos or something? He probably shouldn't ask that specifically, but he is gonna ask more generally because they can't afford to be uncomfortable with each other. Raleigh lowers his voice a little. ]

Mako? What's wrong?

[Mako has never really lied to him about anything before, but now she does it automatically.]

I'm just not feeling well.

[She doesn't even know how she'd begin to explain it, or if she even should. There's probably no point.]

[wentnuclear]

[ She's a bad liar. Raleigh frowns, and switches to Japanese. ]

Please don't lie to me. They're just joking around.

[ He reaches across the table for her free hand, not sure where exactly he's gone wrong here but it sure was somewhere. ]

[Mako tenses a bit when he takes her hand, and then he switches to Japanese and her expression softens. His accent is still stilted, and the thought makes her feel a sudden rush of affection. Ugh. Her fingers curl around his hesitantly.]

Are you sure they were?

[Because she's not.]

[ He shrugs a little, because no he's not but. That's because he doesn't really know them. He does know Mako, so whatever she's feeling is more important. And it's true, his accent is stilted and he's not perfectly fluent, but it's close enough. ]

Does it matter? If it makes you uncomfortable that does, to me.

It shouldn't make me uncomfortable.

[She feels ridiculous. She knows it's not logical, but that doesn't make her feel better, and she doesn't know how to begin to explain.]

[ Hmm. He doesn't want to put her on the spot, but it is also very clear that she is, indeed, uncomfortable. Should or shouldn't isn't the issue. At least the rest is fading, and she's gripping his hand back so she's not mad. There's relief in that -- they've disagreed a bit before but he's never actually had a fight with her and doesn't want to. ]

I don't really understand, Mako.

[Her gaze drops again, to their hands this time, and she's silent for a moment as she wrestles with a way to respond.]

I don't want to talk about it here.

[Even if it's likely no one else can understand them. Actually, she doesn't want to talk about it at all, because she'd really rather just ignore all of this than have him reject her outright.]

Okay. We don't have to. But I do want to understand.

[ He pauses, like he's searching for words but it's not a language problem. What he says next is simple. ]

I never want to be the reason you're upset.

[setpoint]

[That catches her off guard, the simple blunt honesty of it, but he has a knack for doing that. She struggles for a moment, her grip on his hand tightening.]

It isn't your fault.

[And that isn't a lie. This is on her and her pointless crush.]

[ For some reason, despite this clearly being directly related to something he did and thus technically very much his fault, the fact she puts it that way makes him grin a little. ]

You say that to me a lot, you know.

[setpoint]

[He smiles and her heart skips a beat, as usual. She just lets out a breath.]

It isn't. It's mine.

[wentnuclear]

We can still figure it out together. Do you want to go?

[setpoint]

No, it's okay. Eat.

[She can deal with her tangled up emotions for now.]

[ Raleigh gives a little nod and lifts his fork, but keeps hold of Mako's hand in his other as he eats. His food's cold at this point but let's be real, it's unappealing no matter what temperature it is. ]
