( 003 » ENSEMBLE ) party time.

» WHO? Everyone
» WHEN? July 1 to July 8
» WHERE? Entire Station
» WHAT? 168 hours of being forced to listen to cheesy music on repeat…
» WARNINGS? the mundane and slightly ridiculous becoming terrible, cheesy pop music, forced sleep deprivation, anger, loss of control, emotions, potential for stabbing, hallucinations, mania, memory loss, confusion, seizures, depression.

0 0 1 » LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED

It starts in the mess hall and it starts slowly. At first, it can barely be heard over the conversations that are happening but as the volume increases, it becomes apparent that music is playing. Not just any music: characters from Earth will recognise these pop hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s. They’re the kind of hits one might find on a Spotify playlist titled “Top 100 Cheesy Hits” or “Songs To Sing To In The Shower”. Power ballads. Boy bands. Girl bands. Woodstock.

Soon, the music can be heard all across the station, blasting from every speaker, audible in every room. Characters who were asleep in their quarters will be woken by the music’s volume, characters under the shower might want to start singing along (but remember, the walls might just be thin enough for the neighbours to hear) and if characters clear some chairs, there’s enough space in the bar for an impromptu dance floor.

Some characters have been working on improving the replicators, too, so while the alcohol supplies at the bar are dwindling and all but gone, the replicators are now capable of making something that’s palatable, even if it’s not quite up to scratch.

What’s the harm in having some fun? It’s just a little music, right?

0 0 2 » I WANT OFF THIS RIDE

It’s just a little music, right? And it is — but it just won’t seem to stop. The first few hours may have been entertaining, at least for those who did not get woken up by the sound of decades (centuries, even) in the past, but the music keeps going long past the point of entertainment.

After two hours, the songs start repeating. After six hours, they’re still playing. After twelve? Still playing. Twenty-four? Still playing.

Sleep becomes all but impossible as the music keeps playing loudly in every room and every corridor of the station. Attempts to shut it down prove unsuccessful.

Forty-eight hours later, the music is still playing.

Characters will begin to suffer the effects of sleep deprivation, in addition to the general irritation that might come from hearing the same two hours worth of cheesy pop songs on a loop: headaches, exhaustion, tremors, irritability and confusion to begin with, followed by lapses in memory, muscle aches, malaise, violent behaviour, hallucinations or mania as cognitive effects set in, possibly also seizures and depression.

And still, the music keeps playing.

0 0 3 » THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE WATER

The music and the sleep deprivation it causes are the reason for many of the symptoms people are feeling, but something is happening that goes even beyond the music, beyond the lack of sleep: something has changed about the food replicators.

The food is slowly getting better, for one, thanks to a group of individuals who’ve been working on improving them. Beyond that, however, imperceptible, the composition of the food comes with something extra -- namely heightened emotions. Whatever causes it, it’s in the water, too.

Those who are already angry feel angrier and have a harder time controlling that anger. Those who are already sad feel sadder and have a harder time not bursting into tears. Those who are already apathetic feel more apathetic and have a harder time prompting themselves to so much as move. The effect holds for all emotions, heightening them, making them harder to control or counteract. Impulses become action far more quickly than usual. Irritation at the music may become anger at the person singing along under their breath and that, in turn, may lead to someone getting stabbed with a plastic fork.

It’s nearly impossible to keep a cool head, though some people seem more affected than others.

OOC: This part of the plot is completely opt-in. Whatever characters are feeling will be heightened and strengthened and their impulse control lowered. Make sure to get ooc permission for any stabby action of comparable deeds, and keep in mind that non-con is prohibited in game.

0 0 4 » AFTERMATH

After 168 hours, the music stops. Whatever was in the water and the food is gone again, meaning characters may never know it was there in the first place. After all, some of the effects of it could have been down to the sleep deprivation as well…

Still, there’s something off about the whole thing. It might seem like someone is watching them. Toying with them. But surely that’s just paranoia, right?

In the aftermath of sleep deprivation and poor impulse control, characters might want to get some sleep or try to mend those relationships that were damaged by careless words or people getting creative with the cutlery.

"What a charmer," she replies, lips quirking up. But he's right—she is still here, despite herself. "I'm seconds from ditching my jumpsuit."

He should have just kept walking, really. Kovacs being naked was weird, but hell, his head was pounding and the whole station seemed to be going a bit nuts, so he was willing to just let it be a thing that existed in his general direction.

Until he saw who he was with.

A little irritable feeling at the back of his skull made him click his tongue. He was probably bothering Bobbie, giving her a hard time or generally being an ass, and she could really do without. So he started over towards them, just to catch the last of their conversation, and then he slowed significantly.

Oh.

Oh he might have completely misread this situation.

But he was in it, now. And for some reason he didn't feel bad about interrupting. "Did you need to borrow a shirt, cowboy?"

Even that came out more irritable than he meant to, but damn it, even Alex had eyes. The man's muscles had muscles.

It was clear to him that he probably had a little more convincing to do if he really wanted Bobbie to ditch the jumpsuit and while on a typical day, he would probably be up doing that, right now he just wanted what he wanted to happen without him having to put in any fucking effort.

Goddammit. So, there's a hot retort on his tongue when a new voice joins the conversation. Kovacs turns his head to find Alex standing there, looking just a little bothered.

"No, I'm fine," Kovacs says, putting his hands back on his hips just because he was a fucking awful human being who knew what he looked like. "I'm comfortable with how I look."

He throws a nod at Bobbie and says, "And so's she. She was just about to join me."

Ah, well, Alex is clearly irritated, and Bobbie isn't entirely sure why. Maybe he just doesn't like Kovacs. The guy is abrasive the majority of the time, so while it doesn't bother Bobbie much, she couldn't blame him.

She snorts at Kovacs' reply, shaking her head. "It's a party. We're going to try to break this door down with our asses hanging out."
donkeyballs: (what the hell you on about)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-07-05 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor Alex did not understand what was going on. This was the kind of thing that usually happened behind closed doors in a brothel, not - in the middle of the hallway of a space station. It did make him wonder what happened behind closed doors when this was the public face of it, and despite himself that made him twitch. He could tell he was more irritated than he should be, but the confusion certainly felt on point.

"You know they'll try an' swallow you, right?" He said, trying to sound mild when really he just sounded really grumpy.

He glanced at Bobbie but couldn't keep his eyes on her, the feeling that he was interrupting starting to overwhelm him and twisting into something dark and ugly and almost hurt in his chest.

Dammit, Kamal, she don't owe you anything. Not even an explanation.

He knew he needed to walk away, knew that the music was just a little too loud and he was a little too on edge, but it was like a scab that he just couldn't leave alone. So instead, catching Kovac's eye and carefully not looking down, he said. "She's been trainin' me for that bet of ours, you know."

Kovacs' eyebrows arch up at that. He crosses his arms, not making any kind of move to put on clothes. At this point, they've both seen his dick so what's the use in diving for clothes. He can do whatever needs to be done just fine naked.

"Oh, I am so pleased to hear that, Space Cop," Kovacs says drolly, rolling his eyes. "I'm sure she's done very well in making sure you don't break your fucking hand or miss the target entirely when you swing."

That doesn't mean he's going to be able to hit someone like Kovacs. He can have all the confidence in the world and Kovacs will delight in crushing that.

"But I don't know if now's the time and place to tell me about your progress," he says, shaking his head. "Other things on my mind."

God, somehow her head is starting to pound even more steadily. She wasn't sure that was possible. She also isn't entirely sure what's going on here, but she can feel her own frustration building.

"Hey, I taught him a lot more than how not to break his hand." She crosses her arms, head tilting. "But if you two want to start measuring dicks, a ruler is faster."

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-07-05 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
He was about to say something about how he didn't know Kovacs even had a mind to have things on in the first place, when Bobbie got there first. The shame was even sharper than the irritation had been, and it knit in his brows as he gave a huff, glancing away.

"Yeah, yeah, I'll get out of your damn way." It wasn't clear whether he was talking to Kovacs, or Bobbie, or both, but there was a hunch to his shoulders that wasn't there before.

"Don't get your arms stuck in a door, unicorn," he muttered, slipping between them to keep walking down the hall.

Kovacs watches Alex leave as far as he'd arrived, staring at him like he'd grown a second head out of his fucking ass. He hadn't even done anything wrong there besides flirting with Bobbie and sort of kind of offering Alex to join.

But, Alex was in a pretty pissy mood so. Who the hell knew what was going on in Space Cop's head?

"The fuck's his problem?" Kovacs asked, glancing back at Bobbie. "Someone piss in his cereal?"

Bobbie's frowning after Alex, trying to parse that reaction. Maybe he's just sleep deprived and irritated like the rest of them, but it doesn't feel like it.

"I don't know. It's usually pretty hard to annoy him."

"Maybe he's mad that I didn't try harder to get him out of his jumpsuit," Kovacs muses, shaking his head and looking back over at Bobbie. She knew Alex better than he did and, right now, Kovacs isn't going to spend too much time thinking about Alex and his fucking hissy fit.

"Maybe he just needs a hug," Kovacs said, glancing in the direction of Alex's exit. "I could go find him, give him a hug, see what happens. Spread the fucking love."

Knowing his mood though, he'd probably go to hug Alec and end up trying to snap his spine when that music kept blaring.

"Something tells me that's not going to help," she replies, shaking her head. It's not like Alex to act that way. If she didn't know better, she'd almost peg it as him being jealous, but that doesn't make any sense.

"Maybe hugging him later will cheer him up, when he's not ready to deck you."

"I didn't even do anything!" That felt an important distinction to make. He'd done absolutely nothing despite what he'd been thinking (and he'd been thinking some pretty interactive things).

"I'm not gonna fucking hug him at anytime," Kovacs says with a roll of his eyes. He wasn't really a hugger if that hadn't been made clear by so many things already.

"Little too slow for my tastes."

"I hate to break this to you, Kovacs, but you're kind of a dick."

Which is an understatement, but she says it lightly.

"And you're not exactly selling your skills."

Please, he already fucking knew that. Tell him something he doesn't know, Bobbie, and then he'd be impressed.

"Didn't think there was anyone around that was looking to buy," he says, deciding to stick with the metaphor for some goddamn reason, he doesn't know. It's probably the shitty music and his mood and everything but he goes with it.

He'll deny it later.
