( 003 » ENSEMBLE ) party time.

» WHO? Everyone
» WHEN? July 1 to July 8
» WHERE? Entire Station
» WHAT? 168 hours of being forced to listen to cheesy music on repeat…
» WARNINGS? the mundane and slightly ridiculous becoming terrible, cheesy pop music, forced sleep deprivation, anger, loss of control, emotions, potential for stabbing, hallucinations, mania, memory loss, confusion, seizures, depression.

0 0 1 » LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED

It starts in the mess hall and it starts slowly. At first, it can barely be heard over the conversations that are happening but as the volume increases, it becomes apparent that music is playing. Not just any music: characters from Earth will recognise these pop hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s. They’re the kind of hits one might find on a Spotify playlist titled “Top 100 Cheesy Hits” or “Songs To Sing To In The Shower”. Power ballads. Boy bands. Girl bands. Woodstock.

Soon, the music can be heard all across the station, blasting from every speaker, audible in every room. Characters who were asleep in their quarters will be woken by the music’s volume, characters under the shower might want to start singing along (but remember, the walls might just be thin enough for the neighbours to hear) and if characters clear some chairs, there’s enough space in the bar for an impromptu dance floor.

Some characters have been working on improving the replicators, too, so while the alcohol supplies at the bar are dwindling and all but gone, the replicators are now capable of making something that’s palatable, even if it’s not quite up to scratch.

What’s the harm in having some fun? It’s just a little music, right?

0 0 2 » I WANT OFF THIS RIDE

It’s just a little music, right? And it is — but it just won’t seem to stop. The first few hours may have been entertaining, at least for those who did not get woken up by the sound of decades (centuries, even) in the past, but the music keeps going long past the point of entertainment.

After two hours, the songs start repeating. After six hours, they’re still playing. After twelve? Still playing. Twenty-four? Still playing.

Sleep becomes all but impossible as the music keeps playing loudly in every room and every corridor of the station. Attempts to shut it down prove unsuccessful.

Forty-eight hours later, the music is still playing.

Characters will begin to suffer the effects of sleep deprivation, in addition to the general irritation that might come from hearing the same two hours worth of cheesy pop songs on a loop: headaches, exhaustion, tremors, irritability and confusion to begin with, followed by lapses in memory, muscle aches, malaise, violent behaviour, hallucinations or mania as cognitive effects set in, possibly also seizures and depression.

And still, the music keeps playing.

0 0 3 » THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE WATER

The music and the sleep deprivation it causes are the reason for many of the symptoms people are feeling, but something is happening that goes even beyond the music, beyond the lack of sleep: something has changed about the food replicators.

The food is slowly getting better, for one, thanks to a group of individuals who’ve been working on improving them. Beyond that, however, imperceptible, the composition of the food comes with something extra -- namely heightened emotions. Whatever causes it, it’s in the water, too.

Those who are already angry feel angrier and have a harder time controlling that anger. Those who are already sad feel sadder and have a harder time not bursting into tears. Those who are already apathetic feel more apathetic and have a harder time prompting themselves to so much as move. The effect holds for all emotions, heightening them, making them harder to control or counteract. Impulses become action far more quickly than usual. Irritation at the music may become anger at the person singing along under their breath and that, in turn, may lead to someone getting stabbed with a plastic fork.

It’s nearly impossible to keep a cool head, though some people seem more affected than others.

OOC: This part of the plot is completely opt-in. Whatever characters are feeling will be heightened and strengthened and their impulse control lowered. Make sure to get ooc permission for any stabby action of comparable deeds, and keep in mind that non-con is prohibited in game.

0 0 4 » AFTERMATH

After 168 hours, the music stops. Whatever was in the water and the food is gone again, meaning characters may never know it was there in the first place. After all, some of the effects of it could have been down to the sleep deprivation as well…

Still, there’s something off about the whole thing. It might seem like someone is watching them. Toying with them. But surely that’s just paranoia, right?

In the aftermath of sleep deprivation and poor impulse control, characters might want to get some sleep or try to mend those relationships that were damaged by careless words or people getting creative with the cutlery.

You are so full of shit your eyes are turning brown.

[The original phrase didn't work because his eyes weren't brown, but whatever. Kira wasn't in this for accuracy. He hated Ryo. He hated him for a number of reasons. That smug look on his face, the way he just sat there denying he was Having Emotions now, too. He thought he was so much better for bottling them up, and while Kira was more likely to pretend he had numerous emotions, he did have that same problem. So he kind of hated him because he hated himself, too. Whatever though.]

Well, whatever. Honestly I was just hoping you experienced emotions but whether you do or not you are so much worse than literally any robot ever.

[Kira wanted to push him, but honestly. Why should he? He didn't give a fuck about the guy's happiness. He just wanted to bend and break him until he was unrecognizable, but it was worthless to put that much effort into it. He was just going to go off and die alone somewhere where Kira would never find out about it, and Kira would continue living. Forever and forever, even if he didn't want to anymore.

He's too tired to press the assault, but man if this music had not been keeping him up he would have so many things to say. Instead, he just sighs, the tension leaving his face.]

What's the point of pretending? What a waste of time and energy. Well, I hope your beefcake bodyguard at least knows, cause even a jackass like you deserves some happiness.

In the meantime, maybe try not bringing everyone else down with you. You're such a fuckin' chore to deal with, or talk to, or even overhear down a hallway.

[ It may as well be noise, Ryo thinks. Ryo doesn't really deserve anything, but no one really does. Akira, however, is his usual exception to this rule. For Akira, even if Ryo won't admit it, he'd give anything at all. ]

He isn't my bodyguard, [ he says, after the speech, the words coming off his tongue before he can stop them. He isn't. Akira's more than that. The one passing remark about him being a meathead was tolerable, but it annoys him that his relationship with Akira is trivialized. He dislikes humanity, dislikes everything about it — but, he's never disliked Akira. No matter how much he'd like to contest it, Akira was the only reason he was more human to begin with. ] We share each other's battles.

[ He doesn't give a shit what he thinks about him being "worse than" at something than a robot. It's patently untrue. Ryo's aloof, but he's aloof because he doesn't connect and can't connect with something he perceives to be weak — and perhaps doubly so because he knows that weakness is also in himself and that alone, in that core of himself, makes him terrified. He has emotions, but he reserves them. His kindness and affection doesn't parcel itself out to just anyone. ] Were it my idea, he would have left that meeting without fighting you.

[ It's a loaded statement.

But, he'd given Akira his consent regardless. He knew Akira's needs. But, he would have preferred to have taken care of the ordeal himself. He'd have preferred to have taken him on personally, like he did when they were children. He could handle Kira's hatred toward him, but he couldn't abide someone heckling Akira to that degree in front of him — much less at all.

Even someone like you deserves happiness? Ryo sighs, his expression smoothing into something tired as he turns the blue of his eyes up toward the Station's ceiling. It doesn't look out of place with what a weary professor would typically wear. He still isn't going to justify that accusation, because love isn't something that exists and neither is sorrow. But, Akira's significance to him isn't false by any stretch. ]

If that were true, you wouldn't have just watched. Your dog might be strong, and might be perfectly happy to throw himself at anyone willing to fight, but you should know this-

There are people stronger than him, and if they're not as nice as me, they'll kill him if they are outed the way he outed me. So keep that in mind next time you want to spectate some animals tearing each other apart, or you'll lose him.

[Well, that was all he had to say in that regard. Lucifer had not gone all out in the gym, it would have been stupid to, just because some hotheaded demonic entity thought they could get an easy win off of some human. He wasn't going to go around slaughtering people who were wrong, otherwise no one would be left.

Kira stuffs his hands in his pockets then, shaking his head. He was going to have to switch personalities back to Lucifer when he saw this guy because if he didn't he would continue to get heated and it wasn't doing literally anyone any good.

It wasn't like him to get focused on someone anyway. Not unless the focus was positive.]

[ There's a definitive set of things Ryo could say. Moreover, there's a definitive set of things that Ryo could choose not to say. What Ryo opts to, as he hoists himself up with more control than he's likely to be given credit for, is not exactly neutral. It might be the lack of sleep, but more likely there something else there. As much as he hadn't wanted to feed him a reaction, logic tends to skew sideways where Akira was concerned. ]

I'm aware of where I'm needed, [ he starts, the words low and cold. There's something more to the set of his expression than what should be, the veneer stripped to its rawest components. ] And I'm aware of what I can and can't do. [ He smooths down his coat, his hand dipping back beneath the heavy material to rest toward his hip. Beneath the bulk, he's lean — but, it's deceptive. He's taken more than any average human could bear. He pins the entirety of his attention on him, heavy. ] I don't care about your perceptions of me. [ He know he can't deal with someone like Kira alone. He's not an idiot. ] But, that's the last thing I'd ever allow to happen.

[ He lifts his chin. ] I don't need to remind him of that.

[ He's more than aware, Kira, believe him. He might be just a human, but it doesn't mean he's absolutely powerless, just like the rest of them. ]

You can say that, but it doesn't mean jack shit. People lose their precious things every day, and you know it. You aren't so special that you can prevent it just by saying that you'd 'never allow that to happen'.

[No one was that special. Not Ryo, not Akira, not Kira, and certainly not Lucifer. No matter how tightly or how loosely you hold to something you love, you can't predict what will happen, and you can't just will things to be.]

It doesn't really matter to me though, does it? Whether you're miserable or not, whether you or your boyfriend live or die, I'm just playing a game with ya.

[He grins at that. Thanks for proving him right! Not that he needed proof, he already knew he was right, now he was just in a good mood about it.]

As is my nature.

[YEAH OKAY MAYBE HE'S RETROACTIVELY MORE UPSET BY THAT STATEMENT ALUCARD MADE THAN HE LET ON.]

[ There's a pause, but it isn't because he's impressed or frightened. It's because the well of his anger overflows into his chest. The dispersing of that all spreads the fingerlings of tension through skin and through bone. Ryo's attention doesn't shift. ]

Is it?

[ It bites itself off in parceled syllables, seamless and clear. He's awake as he can be under this new experiment, his attention fixed and even. He doesn't care about whatever Kira says or about the other guys. He doesn't give a shit about what Kira thinks he should or shouldn't think. Ryo had made a promise months ago. He hasn't broken it. He's killed plenty for Akira. He's personally seen to it, the gun in his hand back then a familiar and comforting weight. He'd taken that man's life and so too his mother's, just for being associated. It was what he had to do to protect him. It's what he'd do no matter the cost.

He'd like to see anyone try to rip Akira from him. ]
For someone who says they have no interest, you're very invested in making some point and giving unsolicited advice in a hallway.

[ He's just saying. He might deny certain emotions, but he can certainly tell what emotions others are displaying to him. Don't give him that stuff about doing it for the fun of it like he hasn't done that one too. ]
