[ jyn doesn't consider herself a religious person. but in retrospect, there was very little of her life that hadn't been accounted for. planned out carefully between her father and who she could only assume was a righteous god. or maybe that's really what they call the force, something beyond oneself that moves the board beneath her feet. she looks down at her given boots and frowns, tapping them together so the red gravity light engages. it isn't how she's used to traveling in space, but the inconsistency is almost comforting in a way. it's the way jyn's life has always gone: uprooted and taken on the next great adventure before she can wrap her head around it one way or another.

she reads the words in the wall, some she understands. some she doesn't. turning to the person nearest her, she waits until they look up from their prayers, her gaze desperate as it seeks theirs. ]

Do you believe in fate? [ it's urgent. she'll wait intently for a reply, wrists clasped between her knees as she pitches forward insistently. ]

» thinking about a garden i left (PLANTS)

[ it's inspiring, to see everyone working together after the garden's discovery. it reminds her of her parents' farm, of long peaceful days in the sun. jyn crouches by the bucket of intermingled herb seeds and smiles as she identifies each one by sight, separating them out so the scientists and experts can do their testing. it's a simple task, but one she clearly takes joy in, though some might find it tedious. ]

It's amazing how even all the way out here... away from everyone and everything we care about, human nature still prevails. Everyone here helps each other.

[ well she's sure not everyone, but there are a good number of people here. it's heartening to see. she was told the bridge was first, then the chapel, and now this place. none of them are much now, but she knows with human ingenuity they will flourish soon. she wants to be a part of seeing that through, addressing anyone who will listen: ]

So - what's next?

» it was a whole new world (BRIDGE)

[ it isn't like the bridge of any ship she's ever been on, truthfully, and jyn instantly knows she's out of her element. she feels like a little kid again, following her father to work. she squints up at the big screen, the commander everyone here calls "ghost" frozen into frame. jyn looks down at the uniform she's wearing, the same exact one donned by their mystery woman. it's hard not to feel a certain solidarity with her, or just to wonder what was going through her mind at this exact moment.

jyn un-pauses the video just as someone walks in, and she flips around to great them. ] Is she the woman we heard in the communicator? She tried to save the world? [ what does that even mean? ]

» truth grew through like a bramble weed (OBSV DECK)

[ jyn arrived shortly after the music stopped, but she'd heard about that from everyone she'd encountered over the past few days. to someone who didn't go through it, it's hard not to think of it as silly. she'd tried not to smile, but a few people had gotten cross with her. it's merely difficult for her to see this place as evil when she'd only seen the good so far. the light in other's hearts as they sacrificed for one another. it's what she and her father had fought for. she leans forward until her forehead presses against the glass, hands clasped behind her back as she stares at the planet below. is this the world ghost tried to save?

after a while she leans back onto her heels, accidentally engaging the mag-locks again. she'll get the hang of all this fancy space tech someday. for now, she pulls out her mother's necklace from where it had been concealed in her jumpsuit, always fastened up to the highest point. she touches the crystal with reverence, her eyelids growing heavy with memory. ]

Perhaps we've got it all wrong. What if these people were just like us, once? [ she's thinking aloud, not actually concerned if anyone is close enough to hear her. she's referring to the original crew of reverie terminal. ] Lost, scared, alone. They deserved rescue just as much as we do.

» there was nothing hiding you from me (BODHI)

[ it had been natural, to claim the room next to his. they were the only evidence of rogue one aboard, after all, and teammates had to stick together. jyn found herself craving his presence at all hours, needing a dose of the familiar at steady intervals. it's what has her wrapping on the wall between their rooms, face vulnerable and young when she asks: ] Bodhi, are you awake?

[ it isn't too late yet, but it's far past dinner and sundown. she knows how to get into his room, but maybe this is safer somehow. it gives her time and saves her face until she can school her expression into something slightly more neutral. she's supposed to be strong for him, a leader. someone he can count on for all things. she would sorely hate to let him down. ]

The discovery on Deck One has me thinking... Isn't there a locked door on this deck?

[Says Ricki, who's also watching the stars go by- he's cross legged on one of the benches, looking tired enough that he doesn't mind getting this philosophical.]

No on tries this hard at anything if they're happy, unafraid, and safe. But, needing and deserving don't translate to very much in this life, do they?

[ she turns to face him, and though she hadn't been addressing him, she doesn't seem surprised to know he's there either. ]

No, not from what I've seen. I just want to make sure we channel our energies - and anger - into the right place.

And that depends, too, whether you experience anger as a fuel or as a paralytic.

We need to get the fuck out. We need to do whatever that takes. Personally I'm trying to move past rage in general because it's not moving me forward- but that's for each of us individually to grapple with.

[ jyn nods, it's a good point. she isn't actually angry at all to be brought here. maybe she should be, but she'd accomplished her mission at home. maybe her next phase is helping everyone here. ]

You believe we will get out, don't you? [ without waiting for his answer: ] I do.

[ A hand hovers over one of the lines cut into the wall, the words belonging to some long-dead philosopher from a planet he's never heard of and would likely never given much thought to before now.

As it stands, he's still debating their merit when she speaks, her question less of an inquiry than a demand. ]

And if I do?

[adjy]

[ she visibly considers that, rolling his words around in her head before responding. ]

If you do, then I was going to ask you why you do?

Some find it comforting, the idea that there is a greater power at work.

[ The chapel itself stands as a testament to this fact. ]

That their lives, their suffering, has meaning.

Bridge

[Conversely, the man who approaches seems at home. Both because of the great deal of time he's spent on this bridge in particular, and the one he recalls dearly.
He's might not be the woman on the tape, but they share the same stance - his stride is steady and easy, his back straight and his chin is lifted. He's military. He commands.

The only thing that throws him off, is the way the stranger turns to him unexpectedly. There's a heartbeat of surprised pause, then he nods.]

She is. But what she did is up for debate.

[ she takes notice instantly, spine flattening out as she meets his eyes though of course she's tiny compared to him physically. jyn doesn't let it show, puffing out her chest and commanding just enough authority in her stature as mike does. not military, not exactly, but a leader, unmistakable. ]

We'll never know unless we meet her ourselves, not for sure.

Or we find more tapes.

[He looks over her head to the video, watching Ghost as she gives out the order he's heard so many times. It means nothing more now than it did all those before.]

But just because someone says something is good, even if they honestly believe it, doesn't necessarily make it so.

( jim's tucked himself off to the side, difficult to be seen by anyone who wasn't looking so he got a chance to actually see jyn without her being aware of him. he watches her look out at the black void of space, watches her touch her necklace and then say something she probably doesn't intend anyone to hear.

And then again, what if they were the ones that caused all this?

( jim finally pipes up but doesn't move from the spot where he's tucked himself, legs stretched out in front of him and back curved against a wall. )

What if their grand plan was to bring a bunch of idiotic sons of bitches here to toy with them? They're doing pretty well, I'd say.

[ she hums and doesn't turn around straight away, recognizing his voice instantly. ]

It depends if it was their intention to do so, don't you think? Unless intent doesn't matter to you.

[episodically]

Intent matters. I just don't think we can absolve anyone until more facts are known. There's only bits and pieces of a larger puzzle.

( and until they knew more, the story was going to skew one way or another. people would form opinions on what they saw even if it wasn't the entire story. )

I don't know what to think of what I've seen. But, the fact there's no help and no communication is telling.

[ he's not asleep, but sitting near the edge of his bed, looking over the network, occasionally glancing up at the wall with the door when Jyn enters. ]

There is.

[ the locked doors had Bodhi a little nervous, given his first encounter with one had led him to be stuck inside of the metal for better part of an hour but it seems as if that danger has passed with others being able to get in with less incident. either way, he nods, sitting up straight. ]

The map that was found on the bridge said it's a library.

[adjy]

[ jyn leans her hand against the wall and then the side of her face as if she could slide right through it. and still she remains behind her locked door, though she longs for his company. ]

Maybe it will tell us the history of this place and the people who made it. No one seems to think that's important.

[ the implication being that she does. she has a feeling bodhi might be of a similar mind. ]

If we can figure out the history behind it, we may better understand everything that goes on here now. [ it's a shared frustration - Bodhi doesn't know any better than she does. everyone is fixated on finding other things - no less important, but ... he stares at the wall between them. a habit he's not likely to break soon, wanting to see her to make sure she's still there. hearing Jyn talk is fine and all, but it's not the same as a visual contact. ]

The thing is, we'd have to crack the code to get in there.

[ which could take weeks. ]

[ It's almost by mistake, that Amos is here. It's not his usual haunt, a place where he feels more secure and safe than any other. No, that's usually his machine shop, engineering, anything close to a reactor that he can work with. Not a chapel. Not religion. Religion had never meant anything to him.

There's a girl here; better yet, a woman. One he hasn't seen before, but it feels like the crew of this station keeps on rolling, people coming and going, like it was back when they were on the Cant. People finishing their contracts, people starting new. Only there has been no choice here, yet.

She asks him about fate, and Amos steps closer, looking at the walls, painted with faithful words. ]

Fate means that we have no free will, doesn't it?

[adjy]

[ she watches his back as he looks at the walls. that's all she did the first few times she'd come here was read them. wonder what they meant to the people who'd painted them. she hums thoughtfully, leaning forward onto her knees as he addresses her in return. ]

It certainly does restrict it, at a minimum. Then again, none of us chose to be here. [ that they know of. ]

[ She makes a good point. ]

Doesn't mean it's fate that brought us here.

[ He doesn't want it to be. He wants it to be some kind of cold, hard facts. Science. Something he can understand, rather than have to just deal with. ]

I guess I don't believe in it. Do you?

[Elektra likes it here. She loves to stare out into that starry void and lose herself to meditation. It's necessary to aid in her healing as it is for her mental well-being as Stick would remind her if they were speaking or if he had ever truly been here. She's not surprised someone else has similar feelings about it or at least appears to. She lingers at the wall furthest from the glass and wonders how long it will take for the person to get lost so she can focus when Jyn speaks up.

Elektra responds to question despite knowing it can't be directed at her.] It doesn't matter if they did or not. We can only save ourselves.

[adjy]

[ she turns to see the woman, something about her giving jyn pause though there's nothing physically amiss. she drops the crystal in her hand, letting it drop to the front of her jumpsuit. ]

You can't know that. They could still be alive.

[blacksky]

[Elektra raises a brow. Jyn actually has a point there. She's filing that away for later. She's got a role to play and sympathetic to the plight of others isn't part of it.] Have you seen the video where the floor tries to eat a man? I highly doubt they survived this place and if they did, I wish they hadn't because they should destroyed the place when they had the chance.

bridge

[subplot]

[Karen's at the bridge to see the maps Erik told her might possibly still be visible, and she's not really surprised to see someone else is there already. It's either early in the day or way too late for most people to be up and moving, but Karen doesn't exactly respect things like sleep as long as she's still able to reasonably function. When she glances over Jyn's direction and sees the video she's watching, she's easily pulled in and forgets the task she's here to focus on.

She currently has a distrust of the old captain of the station but wears a neutral look on her face as she examines the screen.]

She claims to have tried. But she's not very specific which world she tried saving.

[adjy]

[ the first thing she notes is karen's choice of dress, the light fabrics and high heels of a businesswoman, or a senator. her eyes move from the footwear to the woman's fair features, uncommon where she comes from and perhaps striking for that reason. ]

That's what I was thinking, too. Others have said this outfit is clearly from a place called Earth. Do you agree with that assessment?

[subplot]

[Karen takes instant note of the look over but doesn't say anything. There's more important things to focus on here. She leans over Jyn's shoulder, getting in close to look at the screen.]

I thought the same thing when I first watched it. But without knowing what exists on other planets...

[She doesn't want to give a presumptuous answer, but she also doesn't want to sound indecisive. It makes her frown as she takes a few moments longer to watch the screen.]

People on Earth do wear things like it but we don't know for sure if that's the origin. We don't have many facts at all about the crew that was here before us.
