I uh, I got a message yesterday. It came from someone on board, I think. [ Bodhi and Jyn arrived together, having just come from the library and their attempts to open it. he seems a little nervous about speaking up in front of so many people. he’s not a public speaker, no great skill in that regard -- but this is important. at that, Bodhi pulls up his device and the saved message, that they’ve gone over, knows almost by memory to read it out loud: ]

“So you like books? VS0V, but you have to play with it. Mix things up."

There was no known sender attached to it.

Jyn and I, we’ve been trying to open the library-- [ jyn grips at his elbow, shooting him a reassuring glance. she is much more comfortable with public speaking so she takes over with a gentle but firm tone. ]

That’s right, we have been entering code after code into the door in all of our spare time here. Those of you who theorized that we are being watched may have a leg to stand on because it was only then that Bodhi received these mysterious messages regarding the Library. We would appreciate any input you might have on how we should go about getting inside, or if anyone of you has expertise on how to trace the sender’s origin.

[ ooc note: as mod states, message will not be traceable but hey, it doesn't hurt to try. ]

( her words are quiet and at first vanessa isn't looking at anyone, gaze lowered. a few seconds pass as she considers how to word this before she looks up, eyes settling on bodhi. if it could help get them in, if someone could solve it, then it was worth sharing. she'd been sat on it for too long already )

There was a piece of paper with a sort of riddle on it, one found by a door that we now know holds the library. ( one that, thankfully, vanessa knows by heart ) It read:

"Ah, but we die to each other daily.
What we know of other people
Is only our memory of the moments
During which we knew them. And they have changed since then.
To pretend that they and we are the same
Is a useful and convenient social convention
Which must sometimes be broken. We must also remember
That at every meeting we are meeting a stranger."

( she also has it typed on her communicator in case anyone needs to read it again but finding that takes a little longer. she also hasn't had much luck in trying to decipher the riddle )

i'm so sorry that this is how this is happening

Oh, wow. [ venus is the one to break the silence, and she does so in the most spectacularly unhelpful way possible. ] That's one of the poems you were talking about, right? The romantic ones. I kind of like it, actually?

[ she turns back to jyn and bodhi, tilting her head in thought. ]

Uh, also, if you don't mind me asking- what number worked to get through? We've been working on some of the codes, so it's nice to see what's being used. You know?

If it is a poem it is none that I am familiar with.

( hopefully it was a clue, something that could help them get into the library. though perhaps it wasn't )

[ jyn listens as vanessa reads the words aloud, rolling it around in her head for several seconds. she doesn't have the answer yet, but it is something she thinks she can crack given time. ]

Can you forward that transcription to me?

I'm afraid I don't know how.

( it had taken effort to type it up, and though vanessa could type it had been a slower process. she could just about contact people on the device, anything more she didn't know )

May I? [ she slots herself in next to vanessa and hovers a finger over the display on her communicator, copying the file and attaching it to a message to username:stardust. ] Alright. How long ago did you find the page? What happened to it?

( uncomfortable and surprised by the sudden closeness vanessa takes a step backwards, taking a second or two to decide on the woman's intentions. the question helps and it prompts vanessa to take her communicator out, silently locating where she'd typed the riddle before handing it to jyn, not fully meeting her gaze )

I still have it. ( though not with her ) It was several weeks ago when I came across it.

[ jyn is confused at why the woman seems so discomfited, she hadn't been standing overly close. at least, she didn't think so. forwarding the message to herself, she wonders too why vanessa doesn't wear her communicator. she seems overall not familiar with the technology. ]

Weeks ago... Where? Do you remember exactly where? [ wait ] Why didn't you bring it to the meeting today?

( vanessa frowns, uncertain where the conclusion came from. it was true that she didn't have it with her but she'd made no statements of the sort. she takes her communicator back from her with the task seeming complete, putting it back into the pocket of her dress )

[ everyone else had brought their physical evidence to the meeting, so the absence of vanessa's had brought jyn to assume it was damaged or otherwise lost. the woman seems overall untrusting of the others onboard, something she doesn't necessarily think is a bad thing, but she doesn't appreciate being ignored either. ]

I assumed when you presented this to my teammate and myself that you would be amicable to working towards a solution with both of us. We would greatly appreciate your cooperation.

[ though bodhi seemed to be having better luck with that, for whatever reason. jyn thought she was being particularly pliable today, at least for herself. she lets out a sharp breath through her nose in frustration, but tries to recenter herself and redouble her efforts to work with vanessa as she remembers mike's words at the start. an urge to be calm and respectful, she needs to call on his strength now, touching too at her mother's necklace, the shape of which is visible through her jumpsuit. ]

We all want the same things. At least, I thought we did.

I've given you all that I know.

( with the exception of the actual piece of paper but that could be retrieved after the meeting. this had been why she'd spoken of it, to hand over the riddle in case others could decipher it where she had had no luck. there was little sense in it being solely in her knowledge

her hands folded, trying to ascertain from her expression what else jyn expected )

[ jyn just shrugs, a little hopelessly really. ]

If that truly is all then I thank you for your contribution, and I will get started deciphering it right away.

[ Bodhi listens, brows knitted together in thought with the words - he's not one for any kind of riddle, but it could help. if it could be cracked, that is.

when Vanessa is finished, he asks his question. ]

Was it written by hand, or printed, like a page taken from a book?

It was printed.

( vanessa pauses, thought etched on her expression )

Do you believe it could be from a book rather than a clue?

[onlydoubts]

I don't think it would have been left to find if it didn't mean something. Especially if it was found before the library's location was made known. [ not to mention paper doesn't really seem to be in high supply, so probably not one of them. ] Do you have it, still?

I do, though it's only a small piece.

( almost torn from a book. if it had been handwritten perhaps that would have given something else to it. if it did come from a book perhaps someone here would know of it )

I can bring it to you tomorrow.

That would be great.

[ he gives her a slight nod and brief quirk of a smile. perhaps seeing the words as they were written will give him an idea of something missed, maybe... ]

VS0V. That was what the message said?

( but you had to play around with it )

Would it be too obvious to question whether it was simply in a different order?

VS0V. That's what it said, yes. [ he idly taps his fingers over his comm, frowning slightly. ] We had the same thought. So far nothing yet, but... I think that's the key.

Then perhaps it stands for something else?

( initials or a category or some kind )

Maybe. I'm sure we'll figure it out, we just need to keep working at it. And be patient. [ which he can do. really, he'd rather just get the answers right away. ]
