Head down til the work is done

» WHO? Everyone
» WHEN? After Mike's meeting announcement. (Timey-whimey. If you want your character here, pretend it's whenever you need to be.)
» WHERE? The Bridge
» WHAT? State of the Station Wide Meeting
» WARNINGS? Party-style post. Be mindful of individual threads. Will edit here as/if necessary.

[One hour before the meeting is set to get underway, a reminder will go out to everyone on station that interested parties should meet on the Bridge at 0900 to discuss the current state of the station and forward goals.]

[ It's a way of thinking, in situations like these. Concepts like "colleague", "friend", "lover" no longer apply. There is only "threat" or "ally". Usually, he tunes out the constant thrum of metal surrounding him at all times, but now he is as equally aware of it as he is of Apollo separating him from the rest of the group.

He's strong enough to snap his neck. Probably fast enough to do it before he could defend himself. But he could make enough of a mess that the others might have some warning. He slips his hands into his pockets and clears his throat. ]

Ah, yes. It seems clear to me that no matter why things are happening on this station, it is not safe here. And if the previous residents, or some artificial intelligence they designed, or some other intentional power is behind it, they're doubtlessly monitoring what we do. It makes it difficult to mount any sort of defense when one can't communicate in confidence.

[ Apollo listens but he doesn't look all that convinced. And try as he may, he can't help his gaze from sliding out towards the crowd again almost unconsciously. He reins it in when he realises, refocusing on Erik. ]

Maybe. If it's habitable.

[ But also: ]

The answers are on board the station though, don't you think? We won't find the way home down there on the planet.

[ Erik follows his gaze closely. Who knows the target. Erik needs to be prepared, and react the instant the threat becomes clear. ]

Let's suppose, for a moment, that the things happening to us aren't the result of some misfiring, decrepit artificial intelligence. But an intentional attack. How are we supposed to find a way home when we're being monitored and our efforts thwarted by whatever brought us here in the first place?

If there even is a way home.

I don't know. I genuinely don't know.

[ Since arriving on the station Apollo has had to come to terms with a lot of things. His own impotence when it comes to figuring out how the fuck they're meant to all go home is one of them. There's no easy target to threaten or cajole in to letting them go, there's no convenient big red button that will magically solve all their problems. Admitting things like how much he doesn't know is one of those many horrible little details that Apollo has become increasingly more familiar with than he'd like.

(It still makes him angry, of course. It keeps him up at night, during those hours when he's supposed to - or pretending to - be asleep.) ]

But we have a better shot of finding them up here than down there. The planet is just an escape route down a blind alley, if you ask me. [ Nobody asked you, Apollo!! ] It'll be a nice temporary reprieve from all this horror-movie-in-space nonsense they like to put us through, sure. But will hiding away on the planet get us any closer to reversing whatever it is that brought us here?

[ Apollo shakes his head with a pained grimace. ]

I think we've got more of a chance of finding our answers on-board. Even if they are monitoring us, which, yes, I'm with you on.

[ Which is another thing he isn't exactly happy with right now. ]
